Because Mettenberger keeps missing them wide open over the middle?

Yes. Not sure you can put this all on the coaches, however. I think Mett has been a big underperformer all year. He cannot/refuses to check down to second and third receivers (usually TE). He never looks off defensive backs. I think you will see a much more versatile O next year with A Jennings at the helm.

We have had plenty of good tight ends since the early 70's....

Oh I thought you said "Why has the tight end been virtually non existent since Richard Nixon?". The spelling through me off...

Robert Royal was the last TE to be a part of the O.

Royal's high in receiving was 22 catches and 5 TDs in 00. Dickson beat the receptions and tied him for TDs in 2 separate yrs.

The tight end position is so under utilized by CLM that it is hard to fathom...to me the glaring difference between Alabama and LSU is the importance placed on the tight end as an offensive threat. The best all-round athlete on the field should be the tight end...imagine the Saint's not throwing to Jimmy Graham...what's up with that coach?

But was Dick Dickson the hero of our overtime stunner against Bama in 2000 to break the Curse of the Bear?

I remember that we also signed Marcus Spears as a tight end but converted him to defensive end.

I don't think we stress throwing specifically to the tight end.

He is usually out there as a third option, and only very good college QBS routinely use get to their 3 progression

So we need to convince a bunch of college basketball players to switch to football instead. Did Jimmy Graham even play football at Miami? Did Tony Gonzales or Antonio Gates play football at their respective schools? I thought all those guys were basketball players.

Apparently Graham played one year of football and Gonzalez was a two-sport athlete. Gates was a basketball-only star. Fun fact of the day about Gates: he had originally signed at MSU to play both football and basketball under Saban and Izzo, but Saban tried to restrict him to football only. As a result Gates transferred to Eastern Michigan then Kent State for basketball purposes.

What we should do is use a version of New England's offense which is a version of Tx Tech with two tight ends. Cameron should be familiar with this. We just need the QB to execute it. Miles would like the formations w/two backs and two TEs

If we actually threw the ball to the TE and used more running back screens then our offense would be so much more explosive. The TE would have been really effective against Bama. There was one play Dickson was wide open for a TD and Mett threw to OBJ

Texas Tech has a true freshman at QB and a TE with 88 rec 1102 yards and 4 TDs, The year previous with a senior, 400 yards 4 TDs. In Price's true soph year, Austin-Sefarin (true freshman), had over 500 yards and 8 TDs. It is definitely based on QBs and how good of a TE you have.

We have Spears, a 6'3 WR with 4.4 speed who played basketball until his Junior year and we have a 6'2 225, two sport (other is basketball) WR commited. We are also trying to get this guy named Frank Iheanacho. 6'7 220 4 star WR who could bulk up and be a 245-250 TE for us his RSF year.

This is from 247 about Iheanacho -

quote:

Frank Iheanacho, WR, Houston (Texas) Westside- Iheancho did not play football last season as the 6-foot-7, 220-pound freak athlete was full-time basketball. There have been countless players to transition from the hardwood to the gridiron that end up elite in football eventually. What’s impressed us about Ihenacho on film is that he’s already a somewhat polished receiver. He times his jumps perfectly, has excellent hands and is a relatively advanced route runner for the high school level. Houston jumped in with the first offer, but this list will reach double-digits shortly. Texas A&M and Texas both are sniffing around. Ihenacho could realistically end up as a five-star prospect in our final 2014 rankings.

The big issue this year is that Mett doesn't go through progressions in his reads. TE is always open he just never sees it because he'd rather lock-on to Beckham/Landry.

PlaylikeJeter, I don't know much about football but your comments sure peaked my curiosity. What are we doing wrong with our attempted screens? They haven't been successful.

They were in the Gary Crowton secret playbook. Crowton foresaw 1/9 and was saving the TE pass plays for the rematch, but we ran him off before then and he took them with him :( :( :(

rip secret playbook plays :( :( :(

Actually, a key play on 1/9 involved DP and JJ missed it. Instead, JJ took the quick read for a 20 yard gain. However, the play was set for a TE streak. DP was W I D E O P E N down the middle for a TD.

7-12 might have changed the entire game.....

Unless someone has access to game film, who knows how many TEs plays have been missed.

We have a freakish athlete at tight end. We don't need a basketball player. Desean Smith is every bit the athlete on the college level as Graham is on the pro level. I am not saying Smith is equal to Graham I am just comparing athleticism and where they are in their careers. I hear Mike Detillier say Smith was the best high school tight end he has ever seen as far as pass catching and his athleticism. I am summarizing. Smith had 1 catch this year. We never used him over the middle against linebackers or down on the goal line where he can use his height. Smith can be a big mismatch against defenses. If he isn't used at LSU we may have trouble recruiting stud tight ends like him in the future.
