Did he actually think he was above being fired. This must be coming out of thin air to him. He just seems like he was completely out of the loop. His demeanor has me confused.

Most coaches who accomplish what he has don't get fired. Certainly not the way this is going down. Fine if you want him to go but no way you can say this is the right way to treat someone who has done what he's done. It's fricking shameful.
