I think it's because they get to schedule an extra game due to travelling to Hawaii for a game.

But it could be because of magic underwear.

They're playing 13 games, since they're playing at Hawaii. They scheduled that early game, so that they could still have a bye week.

Gives us a game to scout. Advantage us.

sounds more like LSU vs Va Tech 2002. Big advantage BYU

This.

The most improvement for a team happens between game 1 and 2.

That does allow them to schedule an extra game, but I don't think it allows them to start their season earlier. For some reason, there are five games on that weekend, and not all of them involve teams that are playing at Hawai`i. In fact, one of the teams playing that day IS Hawai`i.

I think it's a negative and a positive. Positive because they get to play someone else and evaluate film to clean up first game mistakes. Negative because the speed of the game between Portland state and LSU will be a big adjustment in one week. They also risk injury before they play us.

They used the Hawaii game to add the extra tune up game before they play LSU
It's ok, they won't be able to scout our offense before
