KenpomI would like to hear the scholarship players excuse again. It’s amazing what other good coaches do every year in the transfer portal basically getting a whole new starting 5 . Hate to say it but I think will wade had 1 returning player at McNeese state correct me if I’m wrong ? I just don’t think MM is necessarily a good basketball recruiter? Might just be riding his one hit wonder in ja Morant. I understand we have two 4 stars signed but that’s meaningless if he can’t coach or evaluate talent . Could be wrong tho I would like to hear some of y’all’s opinions why he isn’t having success here

Here some stats to look at also for those interested

This is stupid.

The man is a good coach, and if you don't understand why we're struggling, then you need to pay more attention.

I normally don’t hold coaches who let a team score 109 points on them twice in much regard.

Struggling because he is just a “good” coach in a tough conference

Mmmmmm I don’t think he a good coach at all honestly. How does a good coach have back to back losing seasons?

Based on what?

Baker had a shaky start to the second half then got taken out of the game for a solid 7-8 minutes? The guy has absolute horrid rotations.

We need serious work on ball screen defense and an injection of athleticism. We need a rim running, shot altering big ala Bigby Williams.

He’s alright. Nothing special. Should get a 3rd season and if there aren’t vast improvements next year you move on.

His recruiting class is pretty good next year, let’s see what he can do with it.

Agree it’s unbelievable how people think he a good coach . I would like to look at our stats tho . And see if there’s any upper trajectory in stats we started bad but are decent at now . That should prove if he actually “coaching “ like his supporters always say

Agreed . But it looks like he doesn’t really play freshman I mean he redshirting that kid we got last year god only knows why? Throw the kid in there to give someone some rest .

He's not good enough to win here and that’s the only level of good relevant. His style doesn’t leave a lot of room for error and doesn’t offer different ways to win so, like at Murray, he’ll need a big talent advantage to have success here and that’s almost guaranteed not to happen.

Let’s look at his biggest wins at Murray state and his tournament record .

Yep, Ja Morant came out of nowhere...only offer was Murray State. Once again, reminds me of Curley Hallman and Brett Favre. Nobody wanted Favre either. And for some reason, people don't understand that signing the #65 and #78 player nationally in this class is really not great. There are only 100 4* in HS BB and then you drop to 3* guys. If you don't sign players in the top 40 or 50, you are doomed to be putting mediocre talent on the floor most of the time...obviously there are exceptions but so far McMahon doesn't have any underrated guys he has signed.

Good isn't great or elite so yeah he wasn't terrible at Murray using much worse players so there's definitely a learning curve. Last year we looked like a HS team. This year we've taken a small step forward and there's definitely better effort which can help or hurt. Hopefully next year the team is minimum .500 or better in conference

No. He is a good division 2 or 3 coach. Scott woodward feared the football program was getting the hammer and sacrificed Will Wade to appease the NCAA.

Woody hit a HR with Mulkey and Jay Johnson. I understand one college cannot win a NC every year in every major sport.

Final question to Mr. Woodward: do you want LSU to be competitive in Men’s basketball ? We have a lot of eggs in the basket for football, WBB and baseball. Does woodward want to invest in MBB ?

Don’t know the answer but wishing and making it happen are two different conversations.

Today was another example of what’s been happening since he’s arrived and why he will continue to lose. We finally took the lead (73-72) with around 8+ minutes to go in the game. The next 6 possessions for us were 3 turnovers and 3 very quick 3s. Then while Bama is pulling away after those abortions McMahon doesn’t call timeout and waits for the under 6 tv timeout to stop the run. This stuff has been going on since he’s been here and it’s one of many telling examples of why it’s just not going to work out.

It’s two players. His first recruiting class was BETTER and you are seeing what he’s doing with it. What reason do you have, outside of blind optimism, to think he’ll do something better with it? Hell, he has a top 100 recruit (Chest) that he has chosen not to play this year
