2003's ending was screwy. I would have rather played USC and believed they would have presented us with a bigger challenge...White was gimpy as hell that game and OU was given a pass for what they did before the Big XII C'ship game.

The funny thing about 2003...it all goes back to this:

USC and LSU both played Auburn that season, but not Ole Miss. Auburn's Ben Obamanu (I believe it was him) dropped a wide open TD pass from J Campbell. Had he caught that pass, AU would have beaten Ole Miss and SC's SOS rating would have surpassed ours. Ole Miss finished as the 3rd best SEC team that year when Auburn was a dropped pass away from being 3rd.

So much is put on the last day and night of football with the Syracuse win over Notre Dame (who USC played) and Boise's win over Hawaii (who USC had played). I tell ya though...that Auburn loss at home to Ole Miss was the reason we won a 2003 NC. That drop made Ole Miss a better SOS win.

Yeah Tennessee was terrible in 2001 when he came in cold and beat them being ranked #2

my bad, he was terrible in 2003 against ranked teams

UGA--> 14/29 (48%). 180 yards (6.2avg). 1 TD, 1 INT, and 1 Fumble (huge fricking fumble)

UF-->19/33 (58%) for 231 yards (7.0 avg). 0 TD, 2 INT.

@Ole Miss--> 16/29 (55%) for 189 yards (6.5 avg). 2 TD, 3 INT.

UGA--> 14/22 (64%) for 151 yards (6.9 avg). 1 TD 1 INT.

OU--> 13/22 (59%) for 124 yards (5.6 avg). 0 TD, 2 INT, 1 Fumble

so he had 4 td's to 11 turnovers against ranked teams in 2003

everybody tries to label him as a game manager who didn't make mistakes. He made tons of mistakes, but he had his teammates respect and never let the bad plays he made affect his play for the rest of the game (see UGA 2003). We had a good enough D in 2003 to mask his mistakes though.

We also probably had the best Oline in LSU history in 2003

Yeah, I am far from saying that Mauck was the best qb and better than JR, but he was the right man for the job ala McElRoy this season at Bama. We didn't need JR because yes, we had an incredible OL with a balanced running attack and the best defense in school history. Still, he deserves all props from all of us for leading our team. Flynn was about the same in '07, if we recall.

Actually, I want to go back to your quoted stats. No one ever touted him as an all american nor a heisman candidate. We won the ship that year, so I dont give a rats arse if he didnt light it up in those games.

I feel you on the qb argument, but as to what he did for LSU, we won the the BCS with him under center so I will not malign him.

I go by what they were when we played them at the time.

It only strenghtens your argument, but pssssst...Florida wasn't ranked at the end of the season, either.

Auburn certainly was. They dropped their first two games, but won 5 in a row - impressively - and were expected by many to beat us in that game.

Arkansas...not quite sure, but think they were also. But, when you lose 55-24 and you're in the 20-25 range, you will drop out.

according to ESPN, neither team was ranked when we played them.

Arkansas was just outside the top 25 when we played them

Edit: Auburn was ranked 21st when we played them, ESPN has their schedule wrong

either way, Mauck was a good QB but he made a ton of mistakes and the D carried that team.

Qb 1 got 500 yds out of 19 more passes completed, or 25% of the total yardage qb 2 had.

Yeah, I would have had to call ESPN out on that. Auburn didn't score a td until their 3rd game at Vandy, but they rolled up their competition from that point until our game and were looking unstoppable. I just remember how nervous I was going into that game.

Arky may have not been ranked, but they were very respectable.

And I agree with all points on Mauck. He still, though, was the perfect qb for our team that season. A lot of youth at the skill positions in JV, AB, Addai, Carey, Bowe, Green, etc. He made them believe in themselves, I am inclined to believe.

Pisces, do you see any paralles with Mauck and Craig Krenzel of OSU when they beat Miami for the ship. Neither were great but they both won the ship. With the talent we recuit, a game manager is what we need, and that includes not taking sacks that negate field goal position (ole miss)
