pick? Not LSU in particular, but in general. I know some free agents can get a few hundred thousand. I understand some leave early and get what they can to help their families. Just curious.

$420K per year just for making a team. More money than 99% of players would ever make doing anything else.

lots of dirt poor kids who've never had anything seeing that rookie contract as hitting pay dirt, very poor job of counseling/coaching from the school, but in some cases the school might want the scholarship slot just as bad

Better question is what's the draw for a highly rated offensive high school player to come to LSU?

2nd contract is where they make the real cash. Want to get to that contract sooner. Life span of a football player is short to begin with. Take your pick.

That too, but money is the main reason...and if they make a team and get hurt, they still get paid...

Seriously dude, put down the bottle. Even when it's universally known that LSU is not an offensive juggernaut, most of our skill players get drafted.

This is the correct answer. Sooner they hit the league, the sooner they get to that second contract (although the vast majority of them won't be in the league by then).

Not to mention the similarity between a first and third round rookie deal.

I figured as much, but wanted to hear what others have said.

As said, money is much better for a post-2nd rounder now.
