Michigan State was 0-11 the year before they hired Saban. Getting them to 10-2 five years later was building it. Not to mention before he ever set foot here, he had two NFL head coaching offers with Giants and Colts. We both benefitted, but we didn't make the guy.

Miles was the 7-5 head coach of OK State. He inherited a built program and a roster that is almost certainly better than the one he will be leaving. Yes, we made the guy moreso than the reverse.

Archer, Hallman and yes Dinardo too were all truly horrible coaches, if we hire anyone in that vicinity of competence, then we deserve what we get. But that's negligence.

It won't be hard to upgrade from Les IMO.

What? He is easily a top 15-20 coach in cfb.

Why, because you looking at his record? He's a great man and a good CEO type guy. Coach, not so much.

imagine what an actual good coach willing to make needed adjustments could do with the talent LSU receives..

Jesus Christ. What don't yall get? LSU doesn't "receive" talent. Les miles and Nick Saban have gone out and gotten that talent that has been here over the past 15 years. It doesn't just come to LSU. For fricks sake.

This is LSU Football. Who was Nick Saban before LSU?
ummm, do you not remember playing Michigan St in the Independence Bowl? Even though we were blowing them out, the announcers still were completely in love with Saban. I remember getting a little aggravated and thinking "what about our coach, the guy winning by 20?" Well, turns out they were right for the most part, although the surefire NFL part didn't work out.

Who the frick was Les Miles before LSU?
Some up-and-coming coach who'd revived Oklahoma St, a place that also had similar success when Jimmy Johnson was there. Probably some thought processes involving comparing the two coaches, figuring he may well actually be the next Jimmy, and just needed similar resources. fwiw, Les at LSU isn't too far off Jimmy at Miami, especially early on.
Also, likely the best available guy on the market when Saban decided to jump ship.

If we hire a pretty good coach that can recruit, LSU will make him too.
LSU hasn't had another guy with the success either Saban or Miles has had. Dietzal's overall record wasn't sterling. Cholly Mac didn't achieve what Les has. For that matter, neither did Arnsparger.

He had like 35 wins after his first 3 seasons with teams that were built to win multiple NC's....not backing in to just 1 NC.

The reverse is true. He was an unknown before LSU.

You mean the only thing that matters? Yes.

Miles has the 7th best win % in sec history and the #1 ooc win % in sec history. He accomplished those great numbers while coaching in the most successful era of sec football, ever.

You can't reach those levels by being a bad coach. It's literally impossible. Miles has 7 of lsu's 21 top 15 finishes and he did it during the most successful era of sec football ever.

I'll take facts and win loss record over the opinions of anonymous message board posters.

Times have changed Scoob. That's why Miles is getting the boot too.

Built to win titles? He inherited a 3 loss team and a program that had less than 3 losses once in 5 years. He took over a program with 2 top 15 finishes in the previous 8 years.

That is flatout bullshite. Saban was a hot up-and-comer as far back as when he took over at Michigan St. Again, you must not remember us playing them in the Independence Bowl in 95. Even then, the announcers were in love with his system

Joe "program destroyer" Alleva is in charge of the hire. It inspires little confidence.

I can see the classic "10 years is a long time in coaching" thing; and I can definitely see where you can say Miles' time has come here.

But believe it or not, LSU is not a surefire national contender simply by default. A lot of things have to keep going right, the way it has been.

Talent- fine, as long as they stay here. That's no guarantee.
