Was it worth reporting on?

Why didn't they just interview him and after the draft say, "oh btw, laels ex was shot. He's got no knowledge about it".

I am trying to look at this as if it were not an lsu player.

If it were say, an nc state player or uva....would I consider this news?

What if Lael had no knowledge of this in any way? This is terrible timing and I have to wonder about the police making a statement about this.

It's not about the school, it's about his projected position

the statement they're making is that they are going to do everything they can to solve a murder. should they not interview someone who might possibly be the father of the child she was carrying?

Try to look at this as it not being someone famous at all and you knew the girl murdered. Wouldn't you want police to follow up on any and every possible lead. Yeah it sucks for Collins that it's two days before the draft, but that's life sometimes. Are they supposed to put their investigation on hold because one of the persons of interest has a job offer in a couple days?

What a kind response.

Yes it would be news to you if you cared about the NFL and particularly if your team was thinking about drafting him. You may not care when you heard the details and say "oh that's nbd" but it would definitely be news that you cared to read about.

He is a projected first round pick, so sorry, it would be news regardless of where he went to college. Would you care if he was from NC State? Only you can answer that, but I guarantee you it would be getting the same coverage in Raleigh if it was an NC State star is it is in BR about an LSU star.

Yes I'd want police to follow up on it. But conduct the interview and draw conclusions.
Don't announce that want to interview him.

Look at this as if it were your best Friend whom had nothing to do with a murder investigation.

Wouldn't you want the police to call him in without announcing to the press that your friend was being questioned for info only, even emphatically stating that he's not a suspect?

Just do the interview and don't announce that they are conducting one. Right?

they announce persons of interest all the time for murder investigations. you just don't notice it because they aren't famous athletes

Like it or not the media is gonna spin it however they can to get a juicy story with lots of clicks.

it's not unprofessional. you know what happens when police departments don't provide to the public how they are conducting a murder investigation? you're seeing it happen right now in baltimore. just think of this headline: "8 month pregnant mother shot and killed, police have no comment."

i think a lot of people have blinders on because they are lsu fans and want collins drafted high. i don't think collins did it and it truly does suck for him if he didn't, but it is what it is

I agree about the media. But the police should just contact the people of interest and conduct interviews. A public statement of, "pregnant 29 yr old shot and killed. People of interest are being interviewed. " would suffice , right?

Only publicly stating that that want to interview someone if they cannot find that person. How hard is it to find Lael?

And yes, I cannot look at this as a non lsu fan. That's why I asked if this were some other school would this be okay if the police shouts out every name of interest to conduct investigations.

Yes. Because Schefter got the story from people in the NFL itself. Teams already knew about it. If Collins had suddenly dropped down the board on Thursday night without an explanation of why teams were concerned about him, it would have been an unexplained mystery.

NFL teams are concerned so it is a story. Now, how it was reported is another matter and draws understandable scrutiny.

The real problem is click-bait "journalism" and people who only read the headlines of those articles and forming their opinion.

I assumed Laels name was mentioned because of whispers/rumors. I was shocked to see his name mentioned after initially being interested in the case. The police announced early that the perp asked to use her car and thought that it was crazy that they knew that much.
