Tuberville's mid-season dismissal of a new coordinator (who had also coached the bowl game the prior season) got me thinking. Honestly, even after the Auburn win in Sept, that defense was shaky. The Georgia game proved it and the Kentucky fiasco reinforced it.

May have beaten Ole Miss,Alabama and Notre Dame. Team would have been 7-4 and then a bowl . Who knows about 1999 ?

Maybe it turned out for the best that we lived through that nightmare.

LSU isnt where it is today if Tepper is fired and the 98 and 99 teams are 6-5, 7-4 type teams. We needed to hit rock bottom and have the program rebuilt from the ground up

I thought that is what the Curley era was for.

"I thought that is what the Curley era was for."

Curley has to be the worst coach to ever lead out the Purple and Gold. I will always contend that Teppar was the reason Dinardo got canned, Gerry wasn't a bad coach IMO.

You can also add Bob McConnel, recruiting too many kids with questionale academics/bad character, and his own ego are also acceptable reasons as to why he got run.

Say what you want, but DiNardo did leave the program in better shape than he found it. It didn't take Saban long to come in, clean up, and get it rolling.

Well dont you think that is Dinardos fault? He had the money to hire top dollar assistants but he didnt.

Ohh no doubt, we had some talent whenever Saban got here. That team was full of LA kids, the same that we are excelling with today.

nothing against dinardo, but i don't think he would have took it to the next level like saban or miles. I will give him credit for what he accomplished. Like i said he brought the magic back but saban took it to another level.

i felt bad for dinardo. he seemed like a good guy, he just didn't know how to manage personnel. he recruited top notch guys, many of them are still playing in the league now. we had a dominant offense in 1998, we just couldn't stop anyone. 1999 was the most miserable year i have ever seen. there was a lot more going wrong with our team than just not being able to stop people. we didn't do a lot of scoring on them either.

Had Dinardo been able to keep Reese and Watts around I think he may have gotten at least to the SECCG by 01 if not earlier. Anyway, I googled Reese and came actoss a 98 season preview from SI. Funny stuff:

quote:

Tepper will be more conservative and more consistent. Says Wesley, "If Coach Tepper tells us to do something one way in September, I expect we'll still be doing it that way in November."

Little did we know that meant Tepper would be telling the boys to give 15 yds of cushion all year.

Joe Dean damn near ruined our athletic program. For all the abuse Bottom Line Bob took, his track record was a Hell of a lot better....
