We'd been waiting to see what coach Caldwell was going to do in terms of filling out her staff. So now we see...............

Thomas-Swinson Hired

I'm not gonna get overly excited but, this has the potential to be a very good hire in terms of recruiting.

From lsusports.net

quote:

Thomas-Swinson took over as the head coach at St. John’s for three years from 1996-99. She landed three Top 30 recruiting class sparked by the nation’s No. 15 rated class in 1999 before she left St. John’s to join 1999 WBCA Coach of the Year Carolyn Peck with the WNBA’s Orlando Miracle for three seasons.

quote:

Thomas-Swinson returned to the college game and the SEC at Florida under Peck. The Gators earned a spot in the 2004 NCAA Tournament, and she was instrumental in Florida landing a Top 10 recruiting class in 2005.

We need better players out there so a high quality recruiting coach is exactly what we need.

On the surface, this looks like a good hire.

They now need to figure out how to survive the upcoming season. If LSU misses the tournament and there appears to be no noticeable improvement in recruiting, the whole staff may be looking for new employment.

If she can recruit, it absolutely will. Nikki's teams always seem to get better as the year progresses. We just don't have talent.

Her & Hubby must have a strong relationship for them to have 2 coaching jobs so far away from one another.

Whats unfortunate is that a hire like this wasn't made sooner. Even with a homerun hire, a disasterous season and a few years required to fix the problems we have, I am not sure if it will be able to save Caldwell, if we can survive this season then land a top 20 class. We might have a chance. Caldwell has proven to create elite teams given having some talent. Lack of talent due to poor recruiting has been her downfall

Tigerbait, I'm with you on that. This may be a great hire. But this upcoming season is going to be mediocre at best. What might allow Coach Caldwell to get an extension is if, during the season, it appears that our next recruiting class will be a top 20 class. Considering this is the last year of her contract, that may be the only thing that get her more time. But the recruiting MUST pick up this season.

You might have missed it, but Caldwell was given a 3 year extension to 2019 last September. I'm not a great linker on mobile phone, but Google "Nikki Caldwell contract extension" and there are plenty of sources.

I did and got this quote from a Tiger Rag article:

quote:

Caldwell’s contract was lengthened by three years to June 2019. She did not receive a raise from her $350,000 annual compensation.

Wasn't she hired at a base of $700,000?

If she can even make the NIT with this awful roster, it'd be coach of the year material

I just don't understand why she was so complacent on making a hire like this until now. there hasn't even been a whisper of LSU barely missing on top talent, so it's not like there was much to hold out for.

I think she's a good coach, but sometimes things don't work out. Rich Rod at Michigan comes to mind for Caldwell. I wouldn't be shocked if she bounced back big at another school in the event she's fired at LSU

Unfortunately recruiting probably outweighs coaching in college basketball. Coaching can only get you so far, size, athleticism and talent matter more and more each year in college basketball. Our lack of post play this past year killed us, our lack of size and not having a post player who could scored killed us.
