i'm looking back to see what game was the defining moment that sprung lsu into this great run. what game do you think was lsu's turning point? i also think this was the game that started UT's decline.

Actually I think it was 1997 beating #1 at the time Florida... but beating Tennessee was key to taking it to the next step of winning a BCS championship.

I personally think it was 2001 Auburn. The game got pushed back due to 9-11. The winner represented the West in the SECCG. The atmosphere was incredible. Fans rushed the field. That was the turning point IMO

I think so. Probably would've won the West again in 02 if Mauck wouldn't have went down.

This was the turning point game - maybe Alabama in 2000.

The actual turning point happened when LSU hired a legit coach.

Yes Alabama 2000 was nice but they weren't Alabama as we know. Auburn had nice years but were inconsistent. And Georgia while competitive never could get over the hump to compete for national championships.

Beating Florida was huge because they were the dominant SEC program at that time. And Tennessee was the next step because Tennesse/Fulmer was the premier program and dominating the SEC at that time.

you could say Alabama 2000, TN 2000, or AU 01 ...all were the best LSU football in decades...

I am going to go with 2000 UT. We just witnesses back to back losing seasons suffered one of the worst home losses in school history the week before (UAB). UT was top 10, that guy wrote the article about death valley being dead and nobody thought LSU had a chance. I think ever since that game LSU has been recognized as at least a threat in every game they have played.

there were many "turning points" so to speak but if you had to pick one then yes i think it would be that game

you could also consider the loss to Ole Miss in 2001 and the run they went on after that.

there used to be a video on the LSUTAF website that was really great about this game. Wonder whatever happened to it.

I heard NS on a radio interview say that the turing point happened during the week after UAB loss. The evidence of the turning point was the UT victory. Saban said without the loss to UAB caused a change of attitude.

This

This was the point when the players and fan base began to expect to win games against top 10 opponents.

Of course not. The turning point was the hiring of Nick Saban. What we see on the field is never the turning point, nor is it ever the key to anything. The turning points happen away from the spotlight when determined men put in the preparation that results in the championships in which we revel. But it doesn't suit our egos to admit that we have nothing to do with these seminal events; no, not even as spectators.

The very idea that something done before Saban came aboard was the turning point is utter nonsense. Saban would have turned this program around even had there been no players here at all. And, had we hired a yo-yo like Curly Hallman, we'd have frittered away any advantage gained before.
