You are satisfied with mediocrity and others are not. Do you get up in the morning and say "75%" is good enough for me? Well, if i were to wake up this morning as a bama or fla fan, i'm in a good mood. Saban is capable of 2 back to back undefeated regular seasons, and fla is in place to possibly play for a 3 title...so please tell me why it's ok for LSU to take a breather for a while? Are we supposed to be content with watching other programs maintain steady success while LSU's program struggles to keep up?

No, I'm not satisfied, I want this program to make whatever changes need to be made to keep LSU in the national title hunt each year, I'm just not stupid enough to think that I know all of the answers.

i think the only answer is the obvious one. get rid of the problem before it perpetuates into a complete disaster.

I'm not saying that is not the answer, I just think that no matter what is done or who the coach is some people will always think that they could do a better job than whatever coach we have.

See, the crazy thing is that the landscape of college football has changed dramatically over the past decade. Over is the time of the life long coach at a university because the fans demand wins. My opinion is that it stems from some coaches these days that step into a program and start winning IMMEDIATELY. Now i do understand that is not a reaslistic expectation for every coach when they take a job. I thought we were taking a step back with Les coming in over our last coach, but was able to move on because Nick was out of mind out of sight and there really wasn't another program in the West that could cause any issues. Now that a disciplined coach like Saban is in the same division, you can see the difference in the 2 coaching styles and skills every year. Les would have been able to "hide" behind the talent Louisiana has every year and have a "decent" season. Now with competition up the road, his flaws are under the magnifying glass for all to see. This is where a school makes a decision of "do we want to just be profitable and put buts in the seats" or do we "want to compete ever year for a title". Well, when you can already argue that you don't have one of the top 4 coaches in the conference...what does that say for the future? When you know that better is out there, do you stay content and accept average?> Sure it's just a game, but the landscape has changed like i said earlier and that is evident in the most lucrative TV contract ever inked with the SEC network and it's creation. The stakes are much higher now on the buisness side.

Our fans always know what should have been done, and can always do it better than any coach we will ever have.

The problem is that if we win the NC next year and then finish second in the West next year people will be upset. Believe it. Read the posts. The expectations here are stupid. I have seen posts on this board that say a failure to win the SEC is a failed season. We have won 10 SEC champs in 76 years. You do the math.

We should expect the following:

To be competitive in the SEC West and SEC each year. For the record, we were this year. We played close games against the two top teams in the nation.
To get to the SECCG every few years
To be relevant in the BCS and national discussion most years
To be top 15-20 most years --- years like last year happen at every school. (I don't mean necessarily ranked 15-20, I mean ranked between 1 and 20, for those who have trouble reading)

We should understand that:

At present the SEC is loaded like never before.
We are not going to win the West every year.
We may not win the West every other year.
We will not win the SEC every year.
We may not win the SEC every other year.
We will not win the NC every year.
We may not win the NC every four years.

If your expectations are an SEC champ or bust each year you probably won't enjoy being a fan of LSU or any school for that matter.

The amount paid to the coach is not nearly as important as football success. Football success makes the entire athletic dept run. Most universities and I mean over 90% have to subsidize athletics. LSU is one of very few schools that has a profitable athletic dept and that is because of football and football only. They are luck to break even on baseball and basketball was only a minor money maker in Dale's hayday.

So, to keep everything afloat must have a successful even elite football program. An extra 2 million per year for that is a drop in the bucket compared to what they stand to lose.

Funny, but a bit over the top. I agree that Tigers fans can be pretty unforgiving, but you're acting as if the LSU fan base has turned into Chicken Little over the span of only one season (no offense meant, Chicken). You have to couple what transpired in '08, with what we're navigating at this very moment. I think the vast majority of Tigers fans simply want to stop the bleeding before the program is placed on life support. If 2010 mirrors '08 and '09, it will take 3-5 subsequent years to recover from this downward spiral. Some see the firing of Les as the needed tourniquet for the bleeding. I personally disagree. I think he needs to make some very sweeping coaching changes before 2010, and he then deserves one final shot at making a run for the SEC West, SECCG and NC. If he fails to hit any of those three marks for a third year, then I think it's time for a change. That's not being unreasonable or unforgiving - it's taking a realist approach for a top-tier SEC football program.
