I missed the sequence that led to that.

Same reason he batted. Mainieri wigged out.

Up by 10 runs or so. Why kill the underdog. Lighten up and have some fun.

I think he ran out of position players to substitute in and when Strall didn't finish the game like he probably hoped he had to make an adjustment.

Through a long sequence of substitutions due to our large lead at the time, we eventually killed the DH. Strall batted in the bottom of the 7th, then came in to pitch in the top of the 8th. Breaux was playing CF in the 8th and then pitched to start the 9th, so Strall moved to 2B because we had run out of position players to sub.

At the end LSU had the 3 weekend starters and some guys who had pitched the night before and that was all that was left.

I like to think OP was going to start a thread about Harris vs Etling and this thought popped into his head before he hit submit.

Ask Lyn Rollins and Ronnie Rantz to explain it
Was it Texas A&M regional in 89 when McDonald started and pitched and then Bertman put him in the OF in case he needed him back in relief.

Not sure of the game but that was a smart move by Bertman to have that "safety net." Once out of the line-up, a player is done (though I am not sure how well a pitcher might done after being in the OF for a few innings and then coming back in to pitch).

College coaches ruined a lot of guys arms in the 80's and 90's. Pitch count wasn't as big of a deal as it is today.
