Buzz and Neds is the most overhyped bbq I have ever eaten, but hey they were on Food Network! I ordered brisket and they bring me roast beef sliced that thin...wtf? The sides were pathetic...no flavor which is typical of Richmond and the eastcoast. Can we say cardboard? Dude you must not be from Louisiana if you think the food up here is good.

You say local? That's Chester. And that sucks. Coming to RVA is not local. There are loads of great places to eat, you don't like BN? Good for you. There are several other solid options.

I actually live in henrico (great schools too) moved out of the fan when, you guessed it, we had kids. But we're about as close to the city limits as you can get because we don't want to live in suburban hell, you know like Chester.

I just left Bowie, MD and was there for 3 weeks. I wish I could have seen this thread back when I was up there.

Are you from Louisiana and what are some "Great" restaurants in Richmond? EVERYTIME I have told try a restaurant it has been a disappointment going back to 2005.

Suburban hell? What is Henrico other than worse schools and higher crime rate than Chesterfield? Where are you from, WASHINGTON DC?

Dude you just hate everywhere! I think the problem is you. By the way there is some great hunting and fishing down to the south of Chester.

WWWWhhhhhhaaaaatttt????

OK, yeah it aint nuffin like Red Stick or even NO for sports, but who gives a shite? Travel a little bit for real MLB or football if that's what you're into. Ever been to a Va Tech home game? Not SEC standards of course but fun all the same. Strong local LSU group...if you ain't out at the Grille on Patterson cheering against State this sat nite, then shut your piehole.

But seriously, when in Rome, do as the Romans do...
- crazy good craft beer scene here, or if you are into wine it's unreal. New cool restaurants all the time.
- Music? well, not gonna compare against BTR or NO, but not bad.
- if the above doesn't resonate with you: Go outdoors! Mountains, great, clear rivers for fishing and whitewater, camping, hiking, 500+ miles of the AT...

I dunno, i feel that i can have a good time anywhere...if you knew me and hung out here in the country and rode the trails in the jeeps and 4wheeler with some WestVa shine, you probably wouldn't be bitchin so much...

OU812, you can Bite one too! Bring it to the Grille Sat Nite..we'll show you a good time!

The fan favorite for BBQ is Buzz & Neds,

Well this thread sure did go down a tangent.
But is this Carolina style. Having lived in Memphis for 11 years, the BBQ in Central VA was never anything I liked, and I stopped listening to my friends about what they thought was good.
When I last lived there, I was on Forest Hill, and I liked the area. Wasn't as safe as Midlothian, or other areas in the counties, but it was convenient to most anything. Still don't think I can go in a bar on that strip, without knowing someone.
Even have a job offer from one of the bars already.

Downtown, the fan, carytown, scotts addition, most of shockoe (it's still a little questionable but unless you're a dumbass you're fine), there are plenty of great places to have fun w plenty of fun bars.

I'm a big craft beer fan and RVA has it all. I'd stack our breweries up with any other city in the country, don't take my word for it, ask the craft community. I spend pretty much all my time at the breweries when I'm out getting drinks, which is less and less often w kids.

I won't likely be crossing the river much to go to bars, and craft beer isn't of interest to me.
I'm a simpleton, and if I do drink beer, I'll do Budweiser. Cheaper, and tastes good to me(I know this will be an unpopular opinion.)
I do want to check out a rooftop bar I have seen posted by friends on FB.

I'm not expecting any of my friends to offer me one of their season tickets, that's for sure. Lol.
Unfortunately that means SRO. That's all I could get for 2 games a few years back, as soon as they went on sale to the public.

It would be really cool if LSU and LSU could get a deal done for a home and home.

And to address some points made by our Chester neighbor:

quote:

Taxes are high and the restaurants leave little to be desired.

Obviously you haven't lived in BR in a while. Taxes are almost as high and the restaurant scene has been, um, uninspiring for a while. Great places keep closing and chains keep popping up.

quote:

The only people I have met in my decade living up here that like it are natives and hipsters and my wife is a native, hence why I am here.

You literally just described what people currently say about living in New Orleans.

quote:

VCU is the largest public university in Virginia and they do not have a football program! What does that say about Richmond?

So Richmond sucks because people don't follow college football as closely as Louisiana folk? Got it.

quote:

The city of Richmond is crime infested shithole!

Again, replace Richmond with Baton Rouge and New Orleans and you would find many TD posters agreeing with you.

Finally, respect chrome_daddy

Yeah, he is extreme.
I swore for years I would never move back, and he is extreme.
Crime in Richmond is better than New Orleans. I don't think I have to worry about being shot driving on 95, anymore(wasn't the sniper from BR). OK, food is better is better in NOLA, but how many cities are better?
And damnit VCU is still undefeated in football.
Eta: I asked for an anchor, this has turned into bash Richmond/defend Richmond.

I lived in richmond many years ago to attend a year of grad school there. I didnt get out much because i was studying quite alot but i have a very fond memory of richmond. There are mutiple cool little nodes throughout the town with neat restaurants, microbreweries, and quaint & even quirky pubs. Its pretty much never quite as hot as louisiana (which is too hot for my tastes). The geography there has slight hills here and there which, if you are not used to it, are pleasant to see. In the fall the leaves have much more color change than the few species that do in louisiana. In the winter there are just enough snow days scattered around to keep those fun.
For times when you want to get away its position on the eastern seaboard has you a very simple drive from dc, Baltimore, and philly. Nyc isnt too bad either plus there are great train options. Lovely blue ridge mountains are also an easy drive west. As are various coastal and bay locations to the east. Oh and by the way richmond sure as hell is not a suburb of dc. It takes 1.5 to 2 hrs to get there. I wouldnt call lafayette or baton rouge suburbs of new orleans!

All other things equal i would rather be living there than baton rouge.

It would probably help the city image if VCU became more mainstream university. They are known well in basketball but outside of that, i feel around the country folks either do not know vcu or think of it as third tier behind elite univ (ivy, cal tech, mit, etc) and major univ (most schools in the power football conferences). Someone said vcu is largest public university in virginia. It might be trie but sure as hell lacks presence if it does. Uva and va tech drown them out. And in non-sports discussions they are futher drowned out by william and mary, and possibly george mason.

Richmond is New Orleans without the great food or the French Quarter! That pretty leaves an old run down city with high crime and bad schools, but they have craft beer!

So some of you fellas say I am mad? I have great life, other where I live! My wife is from here, so I am stuck. Anything north of I-40 sucks and I say that with 12 years of living up here and traveling North Carolina to Maryland for work.

You know what they say about opinions!

Opinions and making things up aren't the same thing. Like your rant about the baseball team.

Personally, I'm thrilled you'll never live near Richmond.
