IMO, Miles tried to coach harder than ever before and got his fingerprints over every position unit on offense. It just reeks of Miles trying to over coach.

I've been saying this for a while. I don't really blame Miles because I'm sure he was just trying to control his own destiny considering the pressure, but his input means bad things on offense unfortunately.

Punting was mostly bad and they couldn't win the field position battle. The offense was bad for most of the Miles era, but they mostly had good punters that could flip field position.

Most people got it right with poor offensive line performance and Leonards injury. But two other things get me.

1. There is no chemistry or sense of team amongst the players. This was a strength of Les and the reason Skip picked him...Team Comes First. I think having Leonard was contrary to Les's style and he couldn't balance team and superstar.

2. Since last season, what did the coaches look at at QB and evaluate. It's clear this team function better with Etling. He does all the little things correct, puts in extra time in the film room, and throws the ball better. Why was Harris on the Field?

My feeling is Les was too loyal to certain players and coaches and it eventually showed up on the field. No one was held accountable for their lack of performance.

Unexplainable. Why was a hobbling LF pass blocking on the last drive in which Etling got sacked? If you can explain that, maybe you can explain 2-2. Another tight end might have been a better choice.

1.) LF Ankle injury
2.) O-line regressed
3.) No progress in passing game
4.) Tried too hard to establish pass against weaker teams (could have beat Wisconsin and Auburn by running the ball 2015 style)

Piss poor offensive line play, coupled with our norm of average to poor to dogshit QB play, dropped balls by the WRs, and Leonard not being 100%.

THIS! I agree. Miles lost his fire. That and he seemed to accept mediocrity. In one of the player interviews about Mondays Practice, one of the players.... can't remember, but he said that Coach O was so much more vocal, yelling at players and stated that was different then CLM, who never yelled at practice.

Honestly? If you look back on all the teams that Les Miles coached, none of them save for a few had really impressive offenses. The defenses and special teams have been really good and were the backbone of the team for many years save for the last few years. For a Les Miles offense to be effective, it relies heavily on a really good defense and special teams.

Also you have to take into account that over the last 5 years or so, football has changed drastically. Rules have changed to let passing be a larger part of the game. Les came from a time where a QB was a very minor influence in the game. That position was not much more than a means to get the ball from the center to the back with the occasional dump pass mixed in when you needed some extra yardage. Defenses over the years became better at stopping that style of offense as players became faster and bigger.

Yelling does not equal teaching. There were plenty of assistant coaches yelling.

You're spot on with everything you said in that quote, in my opinion. So far, the offense looks a hundred times better with Etling.

But I'm pretty sure Etling was not able to play last year due to his transfer from Purdue, and Harris didn't play that bad last year, in my eyes. And then I believe Etling hurt his back (or some kind of injury) a week or two before the Wisconsin game.

So you have a Junior QB that started every game last year, or a transfer from a different program to start the season. I have no idea how either QB looked in practices, but imagine what every damn poster here on the rant would be complaining about if Etling started the Wisconsin game and Harris never got his chance.

In that scenario, If Etlings stats were exactly the same as they are now, people would be screaming bloody murder.

The receivers dropping balls didn't help. It also sounds like he had the team do very little film work on their opponents. This could also explain the lack of halftime adjustments. He focused on what his team could do and not what the other team did. Etling's remarks about staying up late watching film on his own explains a lot. May also explain why Harris looked great in practice but not so great in games when the defense would change......

Maybe, but I think it might be the opposite. I think he's lost some excitement out there and hasn't displayed that killer instinct like he has in the past.

Maybe the pressure was getting to him so he said "frick it". I don't know, but he just hasn't looked the same to me in awhile.

I think that this was the biggest part of it. Not necessarily that he said "frick it" but that the pressure/stress was certainly taking its toll and he was no longer to get excited or motivated himself so he wasn't able to do this effectively for his team. Nothing he tried to do was working so he was probably getting frustrated at himself for not being able to figure out why. Don't get me wrong, he was being well paid to deal with the pressure and still figure it out but maybe it he had just gone as far as he could go but after seeing his coaching style for so many years, I very highly doubt that it was just that he didn't care anymore.

Using the same formula for underachieving he's used for the last 5+ years, i.e., don't engineer your O around the skill-set of the QB so you never have to trust him.

Yeah, but we threw it more in those 4 games than past years. It seems like they were trying to throw the ball and could not get things going.

Don't talk sense to him. He's reaching Blutarski level with the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor.

I was suspect of the O line before the season and felt it was over rated. No push cant protect. That's it in a nutshell.

Miles had Gundy in Ok St which made him look competent on offense. He then stepped into a talent pool most coaches never see in their lifetime and used the coaches in place to keep the ship on course. He parlayed Saban's senior class into a back door championship. Honeybadger was the greatest player I've ever seen and beat WVU and Arky on the way to 2011. Then Mett landed in his lap by finger banging a sororitute and saved his arse for a couple more years.

He's a really good recruiter, good players coach, obviously does what he feels is right for his players.

As far as the actual physical game of football goes, he is outright terrible. Whoever we hire will be a better coach at the game of football. As far as the other intangibles, no idea. But we got that going for us, which is nice...

nailed it.

Etling dropped back 35 times at Auburn. Fournette and Guice combined for 19 carries. Miles became so concerned with winning how "they" wanted to see him win. "They" had started talking after the Wisconsin loss. Skip said as much yesterday. Ironically "Stubborn Les" lost his job on a night where he tried to appease his fans by "opening up the offense" and calling twice as many pass plays as run plays.

This team has looked lazy for years. They seem to play with no fire. I attribute all of that to Les Miles. A team mimics the attitude of their head coach. Les appeared to be lacksadaisacal in his approach to game preparation and exhibited hrdly any emotion on the sideline. The team picks up on those cues.
