Everyone is blowing up saying how terrible our defense was and how awesome our offense was and that this should have been our year b\c of our offense and yada yada..

Well here are the facts..

The only reason our defense struggled and our offense couldn't win and we didn't get to our elite form on a consistent basis is because of TURNOVERS.

This year we have a disgusting turnover margin of -2. Ranking 71st in the nation.

This is by far the worst year we have had in a while with turnovers. Our offense isn't giving up a ton of turnovers but still more than one would like (18) but that can be overlooked.

Our defense, on the other hand, just wasn't creating any turnovers.. We only created 16 turnovers which is the worst number we have had since who knows when (farthest I looked back was 2007). You can blame this on a weak pass rush or just no playmakers in the defensive backfield but either way that's the reason we didn't win the games we lost.

Our defense as a whole was not bad. We ranked 20th in the nation in Total Defense.. You guys act like we dropped to 60th or something. Is it the top 10 defense we are used to? NO but its still pretty fricking good.

For us to be at our best we have to have a good turnover margin.

tl:dr version..

We need to fix our turnover issues to ensure Anthony Jennings wins the next 6 heismans

It is a surprising statistic. Les Miles coached teams have always been elite in turnover margin. Too many games this year where we had amazing yardage totals and too few points to show for it.

while you make some good points, turnovers is so obvious and "disgusting" for #14 team is a bit harsh....sure turnovers matter, but not as much as points! Houston, Tulane and Miss St all have GREAT t/o margins....fyi

This. It's pretty tough to go from where we were in 2011, when you figured on just about any play we would take the ball away, to now

Houston is 8-4 with a defense that allows 420 yards a game BECAUSE of their turnover margin

Tulane has it's first winning season in over 10 years while having the 117th ranked offense (304 yrds per game) b\c of their turnover margin.

the teams you have named prove my point that the turnover margin is vastly important and something we MUST fix to be elite.

I am not saying our system sucked and I hate LSU or any of that negative shite. I'm just saying to be the best we have to get that stat back on track.

I feel like some of the turnover margin this year was just due to bad luck.

We fumbled 15 times and lost 10 of them, and caused 20 fumbles but only recovered 7, meaning the ball was loose 35 times this season and LSU only came up with it 12 times.

I don't really think any coaching changes are necessary to fix this, its just one of those things that will average out over a longer period of time and 2013 was just an unfortunate stretch.

I think the key will be trusting our secondary in man to man coverage and sending more extra rushers. That's been out MO for years now and because of the inexperience this year, we went I a ton more zone and we just looked.

I brought this up after the UGA game. We have no playmakers at all. When you have all these passes hit your hands, you need to make that fricking catch. Guys can't even strip the ball worth a flip.

Yeah no shite sherlock but that was pretty much our only weakness this year. That's all I'm saying. If we fix that we are easily in the conversation to when the championship next year.

This turnover margin bull is hokum! You win the turnover battle by winning the line of scrimmage. Show me a shitty dline, and I'll show you a low turnover count. Show me a great dline, and I'll show you a torrent of turnovers. It's because backs are most likely to fumble when they're hit immediately after getting the ball, and QBs fumble, and throw ints, when they're pressured.

I think the lack of QB pressure accounts most for the TOs.

Well I think you've cracked the code. Someone send a letter to Chavis and tell him to stop teaching assignment and technique and devote the majority of practice to turnover drills.

And by the way, the defense was/is that bad. They are horrible on third down, they don't play their assignments well, they don't tackle well, DB's don't have great ball skills yet, and they don't seem to play with much passion on the D-line. If they did all those things they would be a better defense and I would venture to bet that the T/O margin would look a little better. I would certainly rather rely on stopping the run than rely on a T/O in the redzone. But you are right T/O's will be important next year.
