If Miles hired a competent D Coordinator after Pelini left, does the d collapse in 2008?

I think this was Miles biggest mistake.

I think that had a big effect on our team.

We had to get rid of RP, so JL would have still had the pick sixes, but the d couldn't stop anyone with Mallveto. Miles went from 1.8 to 3.875 per year. He could have easily taken less and give the money to a top d coordinator. Someone had to be available that was better than mallveto. JL couldn't have been prevented, but the D could have with a good D Coordinator hire.

That was entirely on LES, imho.
It was a failed experiment and it killed three years of good will with about 20% of the fanbase.
You GOTTA HIRE BIG.
Les has corrected that in a big way.

That's where you are wrong saying JL couldn't be prevented. The kid has skills, character and he is a good leader. The problem that season is that GC didn't develop him properly and he was thrown in a no win situation. He sure didn't help himself either, but don't be so shortsided - his teammates should have picked him up. There were many dropped passes that season and the O-Line was weak.

Not as bad as it did. There would have been some dropoff from 2007 simply because of the personnel we lost, but there was no excuse to just completely collapse like that.

What I meant by couldn't be prevented was not cutting RP and then Hatch getting injured. Yes, GC didn't have him prepared, but I don't think of too many RS Freshman that can just walk in and do great. Not too many Sam Bradfords, Tim Tebows, etc. out there.

I think if Perriloux had avoided crapping out of the program, we might've gone 9-4, 10-3 or maybe even 11-2 in 2008. Frankly, no team QB'd by Andrew Hatch or the 2008 version of Jarret Lee would end up a top 5 or 10 team. I seem to recall we were ranked about #6 at the start of the '08 season with Hatch at the helm, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought we'd be lucky to finish in the top 15 with Andy leading the team.

It's all shite under the bridge at this point ...

Losing Pelini was the biggest blow from a coaching standpoint that could have happened. Miles made the mistake of thinking that the D was on autopilot and all he had to do was get another caretaker (like himself), to come in and "manage things".

This is Les Miles biggest weakness. No philosophy, no strategy, no big gameplan, just "manage things".

The defense was shaky from the middle of 07 through the end of the year. Pelini left at the perfect time to maximise his position as the defense was going to suffer in 08 regardless of the DC.

Had he stayed around for 08, he would either still be at LSU or an assistant at another school. Timing can be a bitch or a savior.

Because the defense sucked so bad, the offense had to air it out more. We were down so quickly in games that year, our running attack was shelved. I really believe with a better defense in 2008, JLee would of had a better year. I mean Crowton and Miles put so much on that kids shoulders that year when you stop and think about it. There's not many if any young Freshman QBs that would succeed under those conditions. I got so tired of people comparing JLee to a CMcCoy and others. McCoy had a tremendous defensive squad in his support when he first took the field. If we could have run a more balanced attack that year, things today might be completely different. That one decision by Miles to just promote Mallveto has affected not only victories, but players too.

Seems like our running game was pretty productive in 08. I seem to remeber Lee's pick sixes putting us in early holes as often as the defense did.
