What all would need to happen this weekend to get us in the top 4 and a bye on Tuesday in the tourney?

We're currently in 6th and would most certainly have to beat UF twice to even consider this. The 3 teams ahead of us in the west all have the tiebreaker I believe

Right now we got:

1. Florida (18-8)
2. Miss. St. (18-9)
3. Texas A&M (18-9)
4. South Carolina (17-9)
5. Ole Miss (17-10)
6. LSU (17-10)
7. Vanderbilt (15-12)
8. Alabama (15-12)

but Alabama, A&M, State, and Ole Miss have the tiebreaker over LSU (while LSU has a tiebreaker over Vanderbilt)

So, this weekend we of course have Florida @ LSU, Auburn @ Vanderbilt, Ole Miss @ Texas A&M, Arkansas @ Miss St., and South Carolina @ Alabama.

Now let's look through the different scenarios:

1. If LSU loses all three games against Florida...(17-13)
...it's definitely not happening. Even if South Carolina got swept to finish 17-12, it would be better than our 17-13, and Alabama would also be 18-12 to pass us anyways.

2. If LSU wins one game against Florida...(18-12)
...it would still definitely not happen. State and A&M can finish 18-12 at worst, but they both have the tiebreaker over LSU. To pass South Carolina, they would need to finish 17-12, but again that would bring Alabama to tie us at 18-12...with the tiebreaker.

3. If LSU wins two games against Florida...(19-11)
...now we're actually cooking. That would bring Florida to 19-10 so they'd still finish ahead of us. But this would take Alabama, who can only finish 18-12 at best, out of the picture. So as long as Alabama wins the series against South Carolina, AND Texas A&M wins the series against Ole Miss, LSU is your four seed. But I wouldn't want our fate in the hands of two other series, especially when Bama taking two from South Carolina would definitely be an upset. That being said, we could try doing things the easy way, but that would include....

4. LSU sweeps #1 Florida...(20-10)
...This would be phenomenal. For starters we would end the season with a better record than 18-11 Florida and would guarantee LSU a top 4 seed, or possibly THE #1 seed if, again, Alabama takes the series from South Carolina, Arkansas takes the series from Miss St., and if Ole Miss wins the series against BUT DOESN'T SWEEP Texas A&M. So, a #1 is "possible," but highly unlikely

In conclusion, LSU would have to win two games to even have a chance at a top 4 seed, but a sweep of #1 Florida would guarantee it. Have fun this weekend!

You da man! Thanks for the clarification. Trying to decide if I'm in Hoover Tuesday if I'll have a chance to see the Tigers (sounds most likely) or if I'll miss them if I'm not around Wednesday and they get the bye. Guess the only way to guarantee I see them, without predicting the future, is take Tuesday and Wednesday off. Thanks again!

Excellent

Does anyone have that clip from Mainieri providing a smart arse remark about teams ahead of LSU (such as Florida and aTm) being the "greatest teams ever". I think the quote was something like "we're 1 game behind a few of the greatest teams ever".

here it is

"...greatest teams in college baseball history"

quote:

“I just felt it,” Mainieri said. “I felt it was going to happen, and so here we are. We’ve got one weekend to play, and we’ve got 17 wins in the league. That’s not bad. It’s one less than Florida. It’s one less than Texas A&M. It’s one less than these teams that are supposed to have the greatest teams in the history of college baseball. And we’re hanging in there.”

I attended Mainieri's monthly luncheon at L'Auberge the week before the Arkansas series when we were 11-10 in the SEC at the time. During his remarks Mainieri said the same thing, that he felt like the team was coming together and was going to make a move which could even put us in contention to win, not only the West Division, but even the SEC championship outright if other teams did their part. He said he had told the team the same thing the day before in a team meeting.

I laughed to myself when he said it and told my wife he's just pumping smoke to get the players to believe in themselves, and maybe he was, but what he said sure came true.

Hat's off to him for believing in his team when no one else did.....

I'm predicting LSU to go 6-0 in their next 2 series. Home vs arkansas and @ Tenn. Lets go

Suck it Paul
