and it is true in terms of total win...
but out of curiosity I researched it.
...not trying to put them down, just wanted to know.

and then 1998.
11 of the 12 were 1978 or earlier.
now, that's also the #1 decline.

I'll put 'em down for you.
Prior to 1975, the tourney was so small as to be almost insignificant. Hell, in the 1950's, Northern CO played in few of the districts to qualify for the world series and it was them and one other team. So you had 8-15 teams playing for a spot in a 4-team college world series.
It's nice that USC can claim all those titles but college baseball in the 40's-70's was practically non-existent. I just think LSU's 6 in 20 is more impressive. Hell, UT's won 4 since '75 which is damn impressive.
