The whole "stick figure" and "word" thing is what the people want. This isn't 1992 any more. The crowd who is still there at halftime is much more into the stuff like this and just isn't entertained by all the drill stuff. I can't tell you how many times there have been threads on this board bitching about how boring the halftime shows were. "But muh Latin Flair" rabble rabble rabble. So while I am sure the drill shows were a way for the band folks to show off to each other, they just became very bland.

Yep. The TV show halftime performance was getting tweets from the Office cast. No one gives a shite about the Songs of Yesteryear for the 9th straight year.

Check out the bands page on Facebook...a few live videos from the stadium performance on Saturday. I believe they have ~28 tubas, 21 baritones, ~30 mellophones (and they cut ten)...not sure about trumpets/trombones but the brass numbers are much higher than the previous few years.

This year, in particular, has been a rough one because we had a record number of students come to our preseason camp

Maybe a record number of students trying out since he's been associated with the band, but I seriously doubt they had more kids try out than when Frank Wickes and Linda Moorhouse were in charge.

I'm glad to hear that they have 325 members, but that doesn't mean they'll be loud. I watched the video of them doing their practice march down Victory Hill, and it appeared that there are almost as many woodwinds as brass.

I wasn't a fan of the constant "Latin flair" shows either, but the stick figures and word spell outs remind me of what my high school band used to do.

Then what would you suggest for halftime entertainment by the band? You dont want shapes, words, and stick figures. You don't want Latin Flair. What else is there?

My son's in TB this year. There are 59 trumpets and I spoke to band mom and her son plays tuba. There are 30 of them.

I've heard that if you can carry a tuba you are in the band. Competition for baritones was not especially strong either. They had trumpets galore and plenty of saxophones trying out. I'll try to get some numbers.

This is what I was afraid of. It's not just about quantity, although we did need to get numbers up.

Quality is just as, if not more, important.

I still can't believe that LSU didn't even attempt to do a nationwide search for a new Tiger Band director.

I'd about the actual band, but you always know that the golden girls are gonna bring the heat. GEAUX TIGERS.

From what I understand, a nation wide search for Band Director will be held in the coming months/year. We'll see if that happens.

As a Tiger Band Member from 1971-74, many were not happy with the Band's halftime format of military drill (block or line) and pageantry and music choices. Later, many were not happy with the free-form (drum corps) and music choices. Today, many are not happy with the total pageantry format and music choices. What ya gonna do?

From the videos I've seen this past week of Tiger Band--there is a marked improvement in basic fundamentals--marching in step being my biggest complaint over the past 3 years. Hopefully other "band things" will be improved also.

My other complaint is that Tiger Band has lost "that LSU Sound"--the characteristic band sound. Too many students are allowed to play with forced, uncharacteristic tone qualities and out of tune. (see the many mom and pop videos posted online). This type of sound does not carry far.

And yes, the Red Zone (donkey call) thing needs to go.

It's a shame that Tiger Band, which was once at the top of the top echelon of college bands has been allowed to settle down into muddy ranks of 'just another college band'.

When I was in school we had a weight limit for the color guard.

You had to be at least 300 lbs to audition.

I wish I could believe that LSU will go out and try to bring in the best band director they can, but from what I know of the current administration, that won’t be the case.

Tiger Band has lost "that LSU Sound"

Swor called it "Warm Air" when I was in the band, 1972-75. You're right--they have a brassy, shallow sound to them. Getting air from way down in the diaphragm would help.

For example, our first halftime show is a fairy tale-themed show but will feature our mascot Mike the Tiger interacting with the band and involved in different formations throughout the show. Mike has to fight through the jungles of "Death Valley" in order to save the princess from an evil villain. So, just our LSU spin on the traditional fairy tale and halftime show that we hope our fans will enjoy.

Can't wait to see this...

We won't. We're not seven-year-old girls. I also feel like they've done the "Mike fights the bad guy" video/field thing every year recently. It's the new Latin Flair/West Side Story.

I think tiger band is not under the auspices of the Athletic Department any more. They belong to the school of music.

Now...my 2 cents....BRING BACK THE TIGERETTES!
