Thoughts on baseball's OOC schedule.

I remember listening to the radio sometime last year and Ryan Theriot was commenting on the fact that LSU's baseball schedule OOC is a joke. He suggested that LSU needs to travel to the west coast somewhere and play a 3 game series against teams like ASU or UCLA. Even if we were to drop 2 of 3, it would still benefit the team in the long run. But instead, we are playing teams like Ball St., Fordham, and Sacramento St. at home.

Was Prairie View and Texas Southern unavailable for a weekend series?

I agree. I would also like one decent home series before SEC play. I just don't understand how it helps to play strictly cupcakes early on. A good road and home test early on should help the team for later in the season.

He needs to stick to trying to be a riot on the radio every Friday. LSU plays a crappy non-conference schedule every year and it hasn't once hindered their effort in making it to Omaha. There is no need to haul arse out west in February just for the hell of it when you make bank at home for 3 games. The fans might like a more big-time series, but I believe it has zero effect on the outcome of the season or the development of the players.

Baseball has to play Cincinnati at the Box so that the softball team can go to Palm Springs, women's basketball to Naples, volleyball to Albuquerque, soccer to Oregon, gymnastics to Vegas, etc.

Because a three game slate at home against Fordham attracts so many fans as opposed to TV audience vs. and Arizona St. or a UCLA?

In baseball more than any other sport the OOC games for power 5 conference teams mean very little. It is all about what you do in conference play. With this being said a team can go either way. Schedule easy home games with teams up north that won't want you to travel back or do home and homes with tougher teams. It doesn't matter which you do because in the end the committee is going to look at conference record. LSU , which shouldn't surprise anybody, decides to stay home and make their money on home games. Also a home game against a lower tier baseball team would probably still have more people than traveling to a lot of power 5 schools in the country.

I enjoy going to all home games.

It really is all about money. More home games equates to more revenue. LSU makes more money by playing two cupcake home and homes as opposed to a legit home and a legit road.
Even the away cupcakes we do play, they are largely in state and serve a strategic recruiting purpose. Aside from Bregs and Gausman, I can't really think of anyone we've gotten out West. I'm not sure playing a game in LA or Tempe would allow a large number of recruits the opportunity to watch LSU play (which seems to be the only justification for playing OOC games outside the box, for $$$$ purposes).

Do you really believe this? I am pretty sure that Mainieri can haul his team to wherever he wants and nobody would say a word, but he chooses to stay at home in February.
But if talking out of your arse on the internet makes you feel good, then carry on...

Yea, what is the OOC schedule?

I would much prefer to see LSU playing Texas, Fullerton or any other recognized superior baseball program to what we've been getting.
We're travelling to Lamar. Why not keep going until we reach Houston. Two decent baseball programs located there.

Let's see, play a 3 game series against Fordham, selling 30,000+ tickets, getting probably 20,000 in the stands for the weekend......
Or travel across the country spending 3-4 nights in a hotel plus flight and hope to get 15,000 people in the stands where you get maybe half the gates (not sure how that works in baseball)?
outside of the two arizona schools, most schools have baseball stadiums that hold less than 5,000, and probably rarely ever fill it up.

LSU's lack of development of a third weekend starter has hurt them severely in a few recent post seasons. Perhaps if we played a little better competition early the coaches could get a better read on their pitching staff.

It's one thing to not kill yourself with the OOC schedule and it's another thing to have LSU's OOC schedule.
It's so bad. Having one tough weekend (like last year when they went to minute maid) isn't asking a lot.

Doesnt matter how many it "attracts", they still get 10k in tickets sold, merchandise, hundreds of $50 chicken finger baskets sold, etc.
Its not that complicated.
