That's perplexed me too.
He's shown that he can do that given his speed and ball handling skills.
This may be an improbable reason, but it made me wonder if it's due to the fact that he doesn't want to get fouled when he drives. He might be reluctant to go to the free throw line, which makes no sense since he'd at least get 1 point, but it had me thinking??

We pressed earlier in the 1st half and they broke it for an easy layup.
JJ must have thought the risk wasn't worth the reward at the time especially the way the game was being called.
