The three things to look at when hiring a next HC

They are tactics, recruiting, and player development.
Take a look at Les Miles. He recruits well. He is good at developing players which is why we always have a mass exodus of talent to the NFL every year. But his tactics are terrible. He has one strategy to win every game. Run the ball until you wear the other team out. He simply cant win a game otherwise. If you look at all his post-2007 big wins (Bama 2010, Oregon 2011, Georgia 2011, etc.) that is the way he has won each game.
So looking at the candidiates, its easy to see why Jimbo Fisher is #1. He is a great recruiter, develops players very well, and is a great tactician.
Chip Kelly. I dont really care for him too much. He isn't a proven recruiter, and his player development is kind of meh. However he does have great tactics and develops good gameplans to put his team in the best position to win.
I dont know why this board doesnt care for Dan Mullen. He led Mississippi State to a #1 ranking last year. MISSISSIPPI STATE. To me, he's the guy who has constantly been doing the best with what he has been given even though he hasn't won anything too big yet. He's a good player developer and a good tactician. He's not a proven recruiter, but then again, its hard to persuade recruits to come to Mississippi State. If you give him better athletes and an easier recruiting situation, I can see him being very successful.
My choices would be
1. Jimbo Fisher
2. Dan Mullen
If they dont work out, then we can look at hiring an up and coming head coach. And all of this is, of course, assuming we fire Les Miles

I give you recuiting and that's it. If you are talkin about them being developed for the NFL. That's a hell no! But if it's preparing them to be good young men in their futures. I can see that.

I don't think we have a shot at Jimbo. Dan Mullen should be the number 1 target... I hate all of you. Keep Les Miles.

How long did that last?
We were to a #2 ranking this year.. did it MATTER?
No, that's so dumb... just like everyone was ready to proclaim Memphis coach as the next big thing but he has gone on to drop 3..
You don't get credit for a half of a nice season.
So Miss St, with their most senior team and a heisman like caliber QB in their best season STILL dropped 3 games, and were 1 hail mary completion from a 4th drop.. and people want him? He can't even beat Bama with his spread.. and even a&m and Ole Miss have been doing this.. and his teams still dropped games late.. you know.. when it matters most..
This is what we are doing already.. We need a coach who can win the big games LATE..
Mullen would be at best an equal move to our current trend. I don't care where Miss st once was, they are still an SEC west school now.. Mullen is 26-29 overall in the conference..
He is 17-14 the past 4 seasons in conference play with his Heisman-like QB.. meh

That's my 1 and 2. Both are home run hires IMO.

Jimbo would be my number one, because of his balance on O and known to recruit tremedous defensive talent. He is pretty balance on both sides of the ball, won a national championship, went to the playoffs, 2 straight undefeated regular season.. is only 50 years old.. and will keep his star player on the team as long as he can.
Kelly would be great as well.. I love his confidence and he would be a beast of a recruiter down here.
Dan Mullen would be okay, I guess people are okay with him because they believe it is most realistic. I would still aim much higher. Mullen would make me nervous. He's had 2 tremendous college quarterbacks carry his offense.

quote:Did JJ develop and we missed it? Freak Johnson? Jennings? Montgomery? We could all list 30 players easily. Players were drafted because of talent and some development by position coaches. Miles can't develop anyone. year after year the olines have underachieved and been completely undisciplined. That's not developing players. Miles maybe can recruit. But how much is it him vs Wilson and others?
He is good at developing players which is why we always have a mass exodus of talent to the NFL every year.
