I hate that play. First off you are losing 3-4 yds on the pitch to start with. If dropped its a lateral. Not a good play for short yardage. May give the back a better chance to find the hole when we need 5-6 yds. But not short ydg.

Combined with toss sweep, it can cause emol to be tentative on crashing, besides what the master of shake said.

Throw out the option, I'm trying to remember the last time I saw it work.

quote:

its almost the same mindset as the shotgun; the rb is further away from the defense when he gets the ball, it gives him another second to read the line and look for a lane. its riskier than a handoff but people here need to make up their mind, is Miles to conservative or too reckless?

It also eliminates the possibility of the play action, and it telegraphs to the defense more clearly who has the ball. You say that the running back has the ball deep in our backfield and therefore has more time and a clearer vision of where the hole will open. It also gives the defense time to react because they can see the ball carrier with the football 3 yards behind the line.

It also seems to make some backs very hesitant in the backfield. They shuffle as they look for an opening instead of blasting through the line.

Put me solidly in the camp that does not like the toss dive, especially when it is run from the power I with 2 tightends, and especially when it is run >10 times pet game.

I only like the toss dive when it ends in an LSU touchdown.

It enables the QB to throw a block on the weak side end crashing down. Its a great play design agains some D's
