The passing game is like a shiny new toy

I'm tired of the stale narrative about how terrible the LSU offense is. Just because we're not great at passing the ball does not make this a bad offense. In fact, the numbers show that this is an extremely effective offense. LSU currently ranks No. 12 IN THE NATION in yards per play. That's not yards per carry, but yards per play. Here is the list:
Baylor 9.40
USC 8.06
Texas Tech 7.71
TCU 7.46
Georgia 7.37
Notre Dame 7.36
North Carolina 7.29
Western KY 7.23
Southern Miss 7.20
Ole Miss 6.99
Houston 6.97
LSU 6.96
We're No. 34 in the nation in the most important offensive stat, scoring offense, just behind No. 33 Alabama by 0.2 points per game.
Just a reminder, a team considered one of the greatest in the history of college football, 1995 Nebraska, averaged 13.5 passing attempts per game that entire season. They averaged 366 yards rushing per game, for a 7.0 YPC clip. We are currently averaging 336 yards rushing per game, at a 7.2 YPC clip. And we are averaging 15.5 passing attempts per game.
No, I'm not saying we're Nebraska, but nobody ever said Nebraska had a bad offense because they hardly ever passed the ball. And remember what they did to the high-flying Gators in the title game that year. 62-24. You know what Nebraska's passing stats were in that game: 6/15 with 2 INTs and 105 yards.
Yes, I'd like to see our passing game improve, but we still have an effective offense.

I agree with this, just imagine if you take away every single drop, our passing efficiency would be through the roof.

I agree. I didn't want to get into that and, of course, we've had at least 200 yards of offense and at least 17 points taken off the board directly because of penalties, just in the Miss. State and Syracuse games alone.

Either we have protection issues, we have drop issues, we have QB timing issues....it is just frustrating to watch.
Never more evident than when we needed to score against EMU..."ok, this game is getting close and we have to score quick , we gotta run the dive"

That too, take away all offensive penalties and see where we are at.
We only have one turnover on the entire season, so that hasn't killed drives.
Eventually, we are going to have to use our passing game to win, although I think it may only be against Alabama this season. Our WRs will be ready...

Also, I know many will say, yes, but what happens when we play Florida and Alabama (teams with a pulse up front). I'd say that we have played at least as difficult a schedule (probably much tougher) than most of the teams ahead of us in the yards per play category. As an example, Baylor has played SMU, Rice, Lamar and Texas Tech.
But, yes, playing Bama and Florida (and Ole Miss) will require us to be able to complete a forward pass.

That and we never seem to attempt high-percentage passes. 2/3 attempts are just deep sideline routes or deep posts.

I agree with this too. This is the Cam Cameron special. Check out Flacco's numbers at Baltimore. You can't ever really expect us to complete better then about 55%. If we're over 60%, we'll probably blow everyone out. It's really a passing game designed to open up the rushing attack. Given we're averaging 7.2 YPC, I'd say so far it's worked.

No one is saying our offense is terrible. We're saying it's one dimensional.
And when the time comes where we face a team that is able to stop our run game, it is going to cost us dearly. It's the same narrative we've been preaching for years but always goes ignored because of the "Why cant you just be happy we're 4-0" crowd.
Then low and behold, we finish the season with 2-3 losses...again

That may be true, but a team that can run the ball effectively has a much better chance in a defensive struggle than a team that can pass the ball effectively.
Look, if a great passing team was all you needed, the Saints should have 4 Super Bowl rings by now. But, they could never run the ball (except in 2009, no coincidence there), and have had, for the most part, crappy defenses. So, they won 10 to 11 games per year on average (and looked spectacular in many of those wins), but got beat by the more physical teams like Seattle and San Fran.
And there are very very few teams that have true true balance, where they can run the ball every bit as effectively as they pass it, and vice versa.
Take Baylor this year, for example. Right now, they are rushing AND passing for 350+ yards per game. Do you really think when they play a team with a defensive pulse they'll be running the ball like that? I don't.

let's see how effective this offense is against alabama if we continue to suck passing. the passing game has got to get going if lsu has any hope of even staying in that game. otherwise the tigers will end up like uga.

Like most people here, I'm pretty sure people are okay with passing it less than 20 times a game, we just want to complete a portion of those passes for 3rd down conversions. Get that done, and this team could be nearly unstoppable.

No one is saying that LSU should have "true balance." The running game is the strength of this offense. No question. But it shouldn't be unrealistic for LSU to avg. more than 90 ypg. This team also has some damn good WRs and a QB that looks like he can really throw it. If you can be effective in both aspects of the offense, then why not be?

And if they can't run the football, they will still be able to throw it. What happens when someone stifles LSU's running game (at least to some extent)? Your whole argument is premised on the fact that LSU has a dominant defense than can keep them in a very low scoring game. So far the defense has been good, but I wouldn't say it has been a dominant as say 2011. Plus, Special Teams look much worse than 2011.
If you can be effective running and throwing the football, why not be? There's no rule saying you can't be both. A lot of people here look at this argument as an either/or premises. Either LSU has to be a strictly power running team OR a wide open spread offense. Most are just advocating that LSU be effective enough in the passing game to ensure that a team with a great defense can't sell out and completely stop the running game.
