Most fans are smart, but coaching football at an SEC program is not their day job. The coaches usually know when a player is ready for more action. When the mental aspect catches up to the physical part, the player will play.

Oh, I agree. And we can all be irrational. But I think it's pretty clear that Beckwith should have been in earlier at this point. Sometimes you gotta take the lumps when the athletic ability of one player is just so much greater than another player.

As for our toss play, all I'm saying is that it's not the most ideal play for us to run. Our RBs are usually superior and can sometimes make just about any play work. We can get a few yards off of it in short yardage situations, but there are many good options out there.

on hey look at that, we dont just toss the ball for no fricking reason.

Of course there's a reason for it. There's also a reason people jump off bridges.

The proof is in the pudding. More often than not, that play is a massive fail.

The toss dive reared its ugly head on second down on LSU's last possession, when with about a minute and a half left and needing to keep the ball to run out the clock it was massively STUFFED by a weary Ole Miss defense that had been gashed frequently on other types of runs. The second down stuff put LSU in a third and long from which we couldn't convert, giving Ole Miss an opportunity to win the game that we thought had been deprived them when they were stopped on 4th and 1 just a few moments previously.

The most important point is in the last sentence of the article:
quote:

The Tigers’ game-winning drive, 95 yards and nearly six minutes long, included 12 consecutive rushes before a play-action touchdown pass put LSU ahead for good. Three of those runs went for 16 or more yards, and all three were to the outside ? set up by those earlier interior pitch plays.

That's a bit disingenuous. LSU hadn't run many of those interior pitch plays. I counted two in the first half.

Occam's Razor applies here... the outside pitch worked better than the interior pitch because it's a better play.

It is? Someone had the proof, in their hand, and they stuck it in the pudding? What a dumbass. I bet that guy doesn't understand the toss dive either.

It doesn't take many. 2 or 3 gaining 10-15 yards will force the defense to adjust to the inside, allowing the RBs to get outside later from the same formation.

You don't just come out running to the outside against a defense as fast as Mississippi's.

Seriously, how many teams ask their QB to block LB's on running plays?

There's so much fail in that article's defense of the play.

Sure... if the weakside linebacker happens to take a route not in line with the way the play is developing, and if the weakside linebacker happens to break through the weakside of the line in such a short time span, and if the weakside linebacker hasn't already overrun the play, and if the running back hasn't already engaged the defensive line... there might be some value in the QB blocking him.

It's a dumbass play. Always has been, always will be.

In your dreams.

In all honesty, the play on which Magee fumbled was an inside pitch, and it went for nice yardage. Aside from that, when has that play gained 10-15 yards in this or any other game?

You sound like you are rooting against the play because it will make you completely wrong in your assessment.

Were you in a coma during Hill's career?

you talking the toss dive, or the toss power? Hill took the toss power for a few long runs.

Correct. It's a different play.
