Rondell Mealey

Mealey was a stud!!

I drove from Tx to Shreveport in '98 for the independence bowl...
(The immortal) Kevin Faulk got hurt early & Mealey came in and set and record wit 220 something yards or sum silly like that.

Had Cecil Collins as the 3rd back and he was nearly the highest regarded of the 3.
LSU has had a stable of backs for damn near 2 decade
s plus at least it's awesome .

Edit: it was vs notre dame (jarrious Jackson days I think made it that much sweeter

This. Not really a tradition like #18 is.

How is it any different that. 18?

#18 happened by chance when Mauck and Hester had it back to back. Mauck didn't "pass it down" like many believe

This. I agree.

Though I have no problem keeping #18 in circulation as a reminder of the 'Ship, & as a motivator for one to be a team leader thru his senior season.

Love both those 'traditions' (if u can call them that yet)

Peterson made that number hot in the modern age, which is why Mathieu wanted it, and Fournette because of Mathieu. Hootie Jones, who decided not to come here, wore #7 in high school because of Peterson.

I can't tell you all the great #7s at LSU without looking it up, since I've only followed college football and LSU since 2005, but I don't remember a #7 who wasn't a playmaker in my time.

May not have been an official tradition but in the wake of Peterson>Mathieu>Fournette I'd guess that it has or will become one among the players, if nothing else.

I completely agree. I just don't see why some fans love the 18 one and completely throw away the 7

And didn't Peterson look up to Highsmith who was also from Miami?

Because it is a top selling LSU jersey and the kids are all about "me" these days. So, all of them want the most recognizable jersey to further personal image. This may sound harsh, but this is today's athlete.

Yeah, it may not be as "official" as #18, but #7 is definitely a number that sticks out for the players that have worn it.

I have one of his jerseys, purple one that they sold one year after season, someone on here put that they were selling them at the bookstore. I called and the lady sold me one over the phone, she asked what number I wanted, and I told her it didn't matter, got lucky with the #7

Perhaps Jamal Peters will wear it after Fournette.

You really should google Bert Jones and look at some film. A little before my time but I can remember the end of his career in the NFL, strongest most accurate arm I've ever seen.

Nobody is questioning the greatness of Jones. He was an amazing QB.

However, the current popularity of #7 at LSU among players and recruits has little or nothing to do with Bertram Hays Jones.

Right...and I never said it did, just a bit of fun history and could be informative to some of our young fans who have never seen LSU throw the ball down the field effectively.

I notice that usually LSU's top star player wears #7. Can anyone tell me how & when this tradition started? It's pretty cool, just wondering.

Trev Faulk (7) and Bradi James (11).. Ali Highsmith (7) and then Patrick Peterson (7) and Kelvin Shepard (11).. and it continues. Or something like that.
