1) Muschamp coaching LB's
2) Saban coaching DB's
3) A special D-Line, with cloggers Williams and Lavalais (flexible hips on such a beast) complimented with Hill and Spear's athleticism

Result: Great tackling techniques and run support, 2 true shutdown corners, great blitz package, pressure on Qb's, etc...

That is THE MODEL for a college defense.

God I miss this combination.

'03 D set the bar very, very high. And I would argue that its talent/experience wasn't too different than this year's. IOW, the difference in performance is not explained by raw talent or experience.

The secondary had two converted WR's (Hunt and Webster) and a true Fr (Landry), only average LB's (Thomas, Vaughn, Alexander), but an absolutely killer DL.

Just WOW. If you think Jai Eugene and Chris Hawkins are anywhere near the talent level of Corey Webster and Travis Daniels, you obviously have not seen any football this year.

The CB position is the absolute number one reason this D is not very good.

I was speaking in terms of overall raw talent. My point was that the '03 defense was dominant week-in and week-out. This year's unit is porous. And I don't think there's that much of a drop-off in raw talent.

As for CB, I think Eugene was like one of the top rated CB's out of HS. Correct? Not sure about Hawkins. On the other hand PP is lights out (do you think he's comparable to Webster/Daniels?).

Try this: imagine the '03 unit being coached by Malleveto and the '08 D being coached by Saban, Muschamp, et al. If the '08 talent had the '03 scheme they too would be dominant.

Kirk Doll coached the linebackers in 2003

LINK

But, the chances of us having a defense like that ever again aren't that good, I don't think.

Peterson is special. He's going to be one of the best cover corners we've had in a LONG time. Also can't wait for Baker to get on the field at linebacker. If we can get a coordinator who knows what they're doing, this defense can easily be one of the best in college football.

The 2003 LSU D is one of the best I have ever seen. Bama circa '92 is probably the only one that I would say was better.

Miami circa 2000 and Nebraska 95-ish were also very good but I would not say "better," although those teams were beastly.

I think in raw talent, the 2003 defense was better at this point.

It has better DEs and DLs, especially for that type of 4-3.

The 4-3 we run today is different.

I don't think 03's DL was more talented, just better coached and def. healthier.

In 2003. This is 2008.

Have you noticed how different the offenses are that LSU is facing in 2008 than the ones it faced in 2003? I agree the basics of the formula you mention are good regardless, but LSU can't play the same style it played in 2003 against these offenses -- not without NFL talent, and maybe not even with NFL talent.

That D could still play well today. Remember Gay could come in at nickel back, and Alexander was a converted safety so you probably didn't lose a lot against a spread look (can't remember who the dime was). And they all were pretty disciplined in their assignments and tackled really well. That D could probably adapt to anything.
