The 1979 coaching search is eerily similar to this one. Bobby Bowden was being courted to replace Charlie Mac in 1979 (great defense, terrible offense, can't beat Bama - sound familiar?). Bowden has since publicly stated the LSU job- at the time - is the one he always wanted. Well, he brings FSU to Tiger Stadium and wins 24-19. Bowden has always credited the win with convincing him he could build a powerhouse at FSU, so he stayed.
Here we are in 2016. LSU is once again after a sitting FSU head coach. Consider these oddities:
1979 Bowden, from Birmingham, Alabama, played QB for Samford, previously the head coach at West Virginia is at FSU.
2016 Fisher, from West Virginia, once tried to get the head coaching job at UA-Birmingham, played quarterback at Samford, is at FSU.
1979 Bowden -once an OC at West Virginia, elevated to head coach at West Virginia, left to take over an FSU program that was in a downward spiral.
2016 Fisher- once an OC at FSU, then elevated to head coach could potentially take over an LSU program that is in a downward trend (though not nearly to the level FSU was in).
1979 Bowden spent two seasons as an assistant at FSU under Bill Peterson. Peterson was famous for his offbeat quotes ie, "line up in a circle", "pair up in groups of three" "lead us in a moment of silent prayer".
2016 Fisher spent two seasons as an assistant for Les. No quotes necessary.
1979 Bowden was faced with the possibility of replacing a long time coach who's time had become stale.
2016 Fisher is faced with the possibility of replacing a long time coach who's time had become stale.
1979 Mac was fired because he couldn't beat his former coach, Bear Bryant.
2016 Fisher is being courted in hopes that he can beat his former boss, Nick Saban.
1979 LSU hired Bo Rein, an offensive minded coach. He was considered a hot commodity after a successful stint at non traditional power NC State. Rein, tragically died in a plane crash a few months into the job.
2016 LSU's choices after Fisher are all offensive minded coaches who have had successful stints at non-traditional programs.

I always find this kind of stuff interesting. As stated, Les & Mac were ultimately fired because of their inability to beat Bama. However, I think LSU 2016 is in a much better position to compete with Bama than in 1979. Bear Bryant just dominated the SEC. I had an old uncle who swore Bryant called Bowden, guaranteed him the Bama job once he retired and that was the real reason Bowden turned us down. Imagine if Bowden had taken LSU then left a few years later to go to Bama? Pretty sure that would have resulted in a shooting war.
Anyways, flame away tRant, flame away.

we didn't get Bowden because he beat us in tiger stadium. thought if he could take his guys into tiger stadium and win, he could compete at a high level. 1979: fsu 24 lsu 19

And the last time LSU hired a coach just to beat Bama they went into the wilderness for 20 years.

One other similarity. In Fla. State's 1979 win over LSU that convinced Bowden to stay in Tallassee, that game turned on one play that was a mistake by a running back. Before halftime LSU was in control and was driving for another score when Jesse Myles fumbled. That turned the game around. Compare that to the end of the Fla. game that may have sealed Orgeron's fate. Without those 2 plays Bowden may have come here in 79 and Orgeron would now be getting compared to Knute Rockne.
