I may be alone in this but I see the band in a quick decline.

They play too quiet (although that may just be the piped in music playing over them). Sitting on the east side and you can’t even hear the halftime show.
They play the fight song and many other lay classics way too fast
And they have gimmicky halftime shows that bore the fan base

It's not just you, we noticed it too. Just a huge decline

It’s sad really.

Yeah, noticed it too. I don't know if it would help to move them closer to the field, but you can barely hear them on the west side (near the top of the lower bowl). I don't care about the halftime shows, but in-game, they need to be loud and awesome. They just haven't been that way in a while.

Technology killed fine arts. Not nearly te number of musicians as before.

Kids in high school now don't have any interest in being a part of the band.
At my son's school , they invited all past band members or parents that play an instrument to join them on the field for football games. its pathetic.

...and I thought, well, maybe all bands are like this now. Then I saw what could be in the Superdome w/ Florida State's band. As annoying as they were playing the same song over and over, they were at least twice as loud. And then with the Human Jukebox, say what you want, but they were fun. Not saying the Golden Band could ever be on that level, but they can learn a thing or two from our neighbors up the road. Of all bands in the SEC, LSU should be the embodiment of what it means to be a band from the state of Louisiana. Loud, fun, soulful.

My high school eliminated the band. Turned the band hall into a weight room for football team. The band used to be the pride of the school. Admin decided it wasn’t worth it anymore.

My son is in middle school, everyone selected either art or choir. Being able to play an instrument is awesome, I don’t get why is so avoided now.

I sadly have to agree. It's evident in the quality of the halftime shows as well.

Not sure if it's due to an in-state decline in high school bands or not, but there's certainly a noticeable difference.

This is a big part of the problem, as I'm sure more schools have done this

If you went to the high school Showcase of Bands in Lafayette every year, you’d see the state has plenty of talent to draw from for the marching band. Perhaps LSU needs to provide an incentive to these kids to make the time commitment worth it. ULL currently offers a monetary stipend which starts at $600 PLUS free dorm for the year. You can audition for more scholarship money in addition to that. I believe LSU only offers a $1000 stipend.

Also, with high school bands at least, the quality of the band is usually a reflection of the quality of the director — didn’t LSU run off a good one? Maybe Woodward should bend Tate’s ear to go and make a splashy “marching band director” hire from a big school with an awesome band??? If it was important to LSU, they would make it happen. Unfortunately, I think you’ll get MORE artificial music and less marching band as time goes by even though the fans seem to want MORE [and by that I mean a bigger and more creative] marching band.

Lots of problems at play.

The School of Music generally hates Tiger Band. Tiger Band gets the funding - School of Music doesn't. Major professors actively tell players not to be in Tiger Band.

You'd think those that were trying to be band directors would need to have some marching band experience. There is currently no requirement that a music education kid has to do marching band and as I said already, the opposite is actually encouraged.

You can hire whatever director you want. The politics inside the School of Music isn't changing over night. The director of bands should also be an associate dean. They are responsible for all the ensembles in the school of music, but seemingly not given any ability to drive curriculum to better the education given to their students.

I think the decline started over a decade ago. The quality of piccolo members drastically declined. Since then it has been a struggle to keep up and has transcended down to all instruments and members.

It's coming back. COVID hit band participation pretty hard.

I also think they play the school songs WAYYYY too fast, and lost their powerful sound.

They’ve had poor leadership since they got absorbed by the school of music.

i was pretty lit the other night, but when they played "hold that tiger" it seemed extremely sped up.....just thought it was the squirrels running around in my head that influenced it. first time i really noticed it.

It’s not exciting, it’s the same halftime shows over & over
The Golden Girls just move their arms, there are local high school dance teams that do more complicated routines

Funding for that program is expensive, and fewer & fewer teachers have the ability to teach band/orchestra. There’s no feeder program…
