How long does the average player stay in minors, before they decide to give it up
Posted on 6/15/16 at 2:49 pm to bigwheel
I have no earthly idea how someone could estimate this. But as far as how long it takes before busting into the show, the average is probably around 4-5...?

Depends where they get drafted.

I'm sure some guys are career AAA players and make a decent living.
I would think at some point the major league teams give up hope on guys ever making it to the majors and cut them loose though. Can't imagine they keep many guys around just to make their AA and AAA ball clubs good.

I'm guessing Schimpf being called up at 28 is spurring this question. I don't know the answer to your question, but kudos to him for sticking with the dream. Hope he gets paid enough to makeup for the low pay since 2009 . Geaux Schimpf!
Edit: Also...

That's tough to figure out but on average...
Rookie's - 4.3 years (It goes down about 10% every season a player stays in the league without being cut
After 3rd year - 10.8 years

Triple A players only make $2,250 per month, during the season. That is less than half what most teachers make. I would not call that a decent living. That is almost poverty.

If you get to AAA and can stick there, that's not a bad living for ten years.
The game usually forces you out based on production.

Some play overseas, more specifically in Japan and make a lot of cash.

How's it work if you're in and out of the league? If you're called up for a few games and sent back down. Do you get paid some cheese for a few games and then go back to making nothing?

Yeah, you get prorated league minimum while you're up. Per diem is higher, and you also get a whole bunch of free shite and stay in better hotels.
The shitty pay leads to players from wealthier backgrounds hanging on longer than those from shittier backgrounds, when talent level is equal.
The shitty pay is also leading to a potential lawsuit.

Until a minor league player is placed on a 40-man roster, monthly salaries are $1150 for the short season teams, $1300 for low A and $1500 for high A. For players repeating a year at the same level, the salary goes up $50 each year. For AA, the monthly salary is $1700 and it goes up $100 per month for subsequent years. For AAA, the monthly salary is $2150 per month and it goes up to $2400 the second year and $2700 the third year.
If a player becomes a minor league free agent, higher salaries can be negotiated.
A player must be placed on the team’s 40-man roster or be subject to the Rule 5 Draft at the end of his fourth season (if signed at age 19 or higher) or fifth season (if signed at age 18 or lower).
Salary for first year on 40-man roster:
2013: $39,900
2014: $40,750
2015: $41,400
Salary for second year on 40-man roster or if one or more days of Major League service time:
2013: $79,900
2014: $81,750
2015: $82,700
Meal money is $25 per road day.
Minor league salary must be at least 60% of the player’s combined minor league and Major League salary in the preceding season.

Schimpf's signing bonus in 2009 was only $155,700, so he's had to grind it out to get to this point.
Austin Nola is another. He only signed for $75,000 as a senior in 2012.

That's not exactly correct. That's the pay scale for a first year AAA player, but there are many guys making well over that, especially if they're on the 40-man roster or have ML service time. Some make well over 100k per year who've been in the big leagues. Regardless, you're not getting rich in the minor leagues. It's designed that way for a reason.

Well you have some that see the majors within a year of signing....
You have others that will never see the majors....
So it really depends on how fricking good you are.

I think Zach Lee has been in the Minors for 6 years and watched millions of NFL Dollars go down the toilet!! His MLB Record is (through 2015 season)
Win–loss record 0–1
Earned run average 13.50
Strikeouts 3

I didn't realize he signed an NFL contract. Thanks for clearing that up for everyone who thought he never took a college snap. I also didn't realize all 4 star qb's were automatic NFL players.

For all you know he never would have made an NFL 53 man roster. He was offered a 5.25 million signing bonus. He may have never seen a fraction of that money in the NFL. He made the right choice. It sucked for our football team but it is what it is

quote:Depends on if he really had an NFL career... I mean he has made over 5m for playing minor league ball at this point Dude saw MLB action last year and probably will again this year depending on injuries or the Dodgers expanding the roster.
