I miss games like these. The crowds were so into it. Didn't matter if we had 4 losses or whatever. All that mattered was beating the opponent that night. Love it.

First of all, could not agree more with this statement. Good times.

One of my favorite moments of that night, and I was just talking about it yesterday with a coworker, is when I realized that LSU had placed some kind of Vaseline like substance on the field goal uprights to keep th from being torn down-again. It was hilarious watching these guys going up and sliding down... It still only took about 40 minutes or less to tear them down

That was fun to watch. I was at that game but didn't really remember the specifics of the game. I do remember watching the guys trying to tear down the goal post though.

i recall that....and i also recall a moment in the game where i believe a bama punt returner misplayed a punt and it hit him??? and during the commercial timeout they kept playing it over the replay screens and it eventually was turned to LSU's ball when that was not the original call.

bradie james was out there pleading our case to the refs and the boos and moans during the timeout almost matched the intensity of the crowd when it was announced that USC lost to standford during our florida game timeout in 2007.

Those were great times, Sabans first couple years were like that, I remember one year where it seemed like 3-4 sec games went into OT, I remember specifically the Miss St game of that year being a great comeback, think the Tennessee game too

Was there also.

Instant replay was used for the first time in college that night. Refs were watching the video board to see who recovered the fumble.

The next play the tight end caught a post pattern down the sideline and the stadium exploded.

That was a great night.

The punt controversy involved a Bama player hitting the returner before the ball got there. The ball then hit the Bama player in the back. The LSU player following the Bama player leaped over the other two and recovered the fumble, but the refs didn't call the penalty and told the Bama sideline to bring out their offense. Saban went nuts, James kept pointing to the replay screen, and the refs changed their minds. It was obvious that the only time a Bama player touched the ball was when it hit their gunner in the middle of the back.

Amazingly enough, whenever somebody puts together a highlight clip of the game, that play is never shown. Odd, because it's the most famous play that day. For a reference, it occurred right before the Royal catch shown at 2:27 on this video.

One of the top 3 games to be at in the stands. LSU fans were tired of losing to Bama in Baton Rouge. It was 31 years of Bama pulling it out on a fluke play, coming together in the 4th quarter, straight up arse kicking, LSU blowing a chance, etc. Never could get over that curse. The crowd was insanely loud that day.

Oh, and I echo the comments on that's when LSU games were fun. Playing for a national title still seemed like a pipe dream, so fans were satisfied with just a big win period.

How the refs screwed that up in the first place is beyond me. After 31 yrs the thought of that streak continuing due to incompetent officiating was maddening. The anger and the tension in the crowd was unbelievable. Had that stayed Alabama's possession and they had won I've wondered what might have happened after the game.
