I know this question will be asked a bunch regardless, but I thought I'd answer it anyway. The higher seed is the home team in the first game, but after that, there are certain rules in place to determine who will be home. Here's the official list, going in order:

1) The team that's been home the least
2) The team that's been away the most
3) For rematches: The team that was away in the previous matchup
4) The team that was away in their last game, unless both were away
5) Coin flip

In this instance, we were home in the first game, and Southern Miss was the visitor. So USM will be home tonight. Similarly, Stony Brook will be home for the elimination game against ASU.

I've always disliked this... always felt like host team earned the right to be home team in their regional/super regional

The higher seed should always be the home team.

That would simplify things greatly. But then, we are talking about the NCAA.

It makes no sense to make the higher seeded team by a visitor in their own park. I’ve always that. LSU earned a higher seed than Southern Miss, so frick rewarding them for not finishing as high as us. It makes no sense

Stupidest rule there is. You're playing in my ballpark, I get to bat last, I get to pick the dugout and I get every other advantage possible.

Always hated how the ncaa handles this. If you earn the privilege of hosting, you should be the home team each game you play. You have home field and all that comes with that

What is the NCAA reasoning for this?

I don't know about baseball, but softball eliminated the coin flip this year.

Any situation that got to a coin flip was automatically given to the higher seed.

It's still not perfect, but that is an improvement.

Giving other teams a chance and also making the tournament more interesting, I guess.

New rule: we may bat first but we can stay in our own dugout.

That's not new. That's the way it's always been. At NCAA events, 3rd base is home dugout no matter what.

If it makes sense instead of cents, the NCAA reacts like the Keystone Cops after a 4 day meth binge.

3rd base dugout was NOT the home dugout tonight.

Now that you mention it, that is right.

Maybe NCAA changed that as well because in plenty regionals in the past, 3rd base has been home.

And it is like that in softball (I know, different sport)

I disagree with all you pussies. Host team gets to,play in their own ballpark, sleep in their own beds, have more of their fans there, etc. Advantages have to stop somewhere and this is where it should stop.

Why does it really matter? You have to beat the team you are playing by run rule in 7 or by 1 at the end. I understand not having to play bottom of ninth or knowing what you have to put up in the bottom. To me you should be playing/trying your best no matter the situation so home or away is irrelevant when you have the "home" crowd. Put them away early and don't worry about the rest. With first bat jump on them early and break their will.

Name another sport where the home team has to change a bunch of shite in the playoffs.

You are the home team because you earned it. Pretty simple to see why you should have advantages.

I never did like this rule. The higher seed should always be the home team. That should be one of the benefits of earning the higher seed.
