I'm sure we've all sped; I know I've done WAY over 89 in my lifetime 
I think the troubling point is just the combination of things. For everybody defending him and bashing the Texans- they cut a fairly high draft pick before the regular season, and he hasn't been able to stick anywhere since. SOMETHING is wrong; you'd hope he was trying to get his shite together while he still has half a shot at the NFL.
Getting a ticket like this just doesn't give a good impression. Right now, anybody considering signing him would do a deep background check to see if he's worth the shot, and this would put a red flag under "reckless/irresponsible".

possibly young, stupid and indestructible, but my '69 Mach I surely enjoyed driving fast and I did not want to make him feel bad

My older brother had a candy-apple red 69 Mach 1 with a 351 Windsor. Was a beast, think he ran a 12.9 or so over at the dragway.
