What? That's he's probably bought to retire in a couple of years and cash on that Alabama state pension?

He's the Darth Vader to Saban's emperor role.

He is also the guy who provides the check/balance to the 'loopholes' and rule-skirting they do. Sometimes he's the one pushing them to the edge, sometimes he's the one who pulls them back from the edge. Extremely refined skill set and very valuable.

In his everyday life he has two 'coordinating' roles. One is their very well organized recruiting; the other is the even more organized but difficult to manage non-coach, non-booster army of admins that somehow find creative ways to contact recruits (hence Bama always "shows more love").

For example pretty little girl A calls Recruit B and asks him to confirm that his name Bob does indeed start with a B and end with a B. She just happens to mention that she's heard Saban talk about him and would be really excited if he did come to Bama. It's an administrative contact from admissions, not a recruiting call.

Organizing 120 or more of those people is a tough job to make sure lines are not crossed and the right people are being 'incidentally' contacted in the right way. Not many people could manage that, especially under Saban's expectations.

So here's hoping to him retiring. Saban will be looking for someone to continue that on, but it will be hard. Like I said, not many people in the world can handle that and balance against NCAA rules.

ETA: and Burns, even though he is a S La guy, laughs at coaches like Studrwa's efforts in N La. Just like Saban, he'll attack you where you are weakest every time, thereby wreaking your strengths.

Coach Burns is a key part of Saban's connection to Louisiana kids. However, as stated earlier, he plays a key administrative role in their recruiting process. Big shoes to fill when Coach Burns retires...Frank, CEO and Juluke know how talented he is

I actually have it on good authority that Burns and his wife would love to come back to Louisiana.

If by some miracle Juluke were to be replaced by Burns... well, sorry. Take that in a heartbeat.

Burns is Juluke++++++++++, just the way it is.

But, I hope he is still around barring that (or Frank coming back). Juluke is no slouch in recruiting and has NOLA connections. I think he's a good RB coach too. Helpful with the WRs at practice too from what I understand. Now if he and CEO or Craig has some 'communication' or 'attitude' issues, that's another story.

I don't know how the coaching circle runs at 'Bama so I can't comment on the different roles Burton Burns fills. OTOH, I did have the pleasure to meet Burton Burns on the sideline of a North Webster high school football game during the '15 season. He was on a recruiting trip to see Devin White. Later that night he was going to meet up w/ other 'Bama coaches who were at high school games in AR and NE TX and fly to A&M who they were playing the next day. He was a personable guy who was willing to talk to just another fan on the sidelines. We had a nice conversation that included jokes about LSU and 'Bama. Yes, he's originally from New Orleans.
