I think after 5 years, it's time to admit that it isn't the talent of the position.

The offensive problems are what separated last years team from a NC and will most likely be the thing that separates this one from the same. If you are content with being Ms Congeniality, good for you.

Mett is just a symptom of the problem.
I agree totally.

I have said something similar for several years now.

We don't have a talent problem, we have a coaching problem.

We can't develop a QB.

Youre right we haven't..but it happens in CFB. Talk to Mack Brown or Steve Spurrier and ask them how come you can go long stretches when you miss on QB prospects.
Mack Brown has development issues, same as us.

South Carolina has an issue with being South Carolina.

What whiny bullshite slobbering drivel. . .

Nobody is demanding the best damn passing game in the SEC.

Just a viable threat that puts up reasonable numbers.

You idiots are the people that see this as an unreasonable request.

It's not even the numbers, really. Our passing game has looked like a completely confused mess over the past 4-5 seasons. That's not a talent issue.

you mad bro?

many on this board were mad when Mett was competing almost 70% of his passes. They couldn't wrap their head around the OL and WR issues and continuously threw Mett under the bus.

Mett is on a pace similar to every QB we've had in the past 10 years.

not taking the bait

If you are going to try and measure how good something is or how much better something is, you have to have some metric. Your opinion of Mett's play isn't a valid metric to me, so unfortunately I have to goto the stats from the games where emotion is taken out of the equation.

No offense to JJ, but he started about 75% of all games during that time and he wasn't a great passer regardless of the OC or scheme. That was a talent issue. He was great throwing off the run, not great when sitting in the pocket. We became a running team out of necessity and now it's become a major strength of LSU.

Yes, LSU has had talented QB's come in and again, we've been a perenial top 10 team over the past 10 years or so. However, no QB has stepped into the SEC and been lights out passing from day 1. THey all went through a rough year or so before they finally got it all together. It was the same way with Murray, Bray, McCarron, etc. THe defenses in this league are too good and too fast. The time we were supposed to be able to have Mett in game throwing the ball and getting ready, was when our OL went to shite and we were scrambling to get it fixed before Mett got carted off.

He needs to improve. The coaches need to coach him. What else is there to say on that situation?

I'd like to see Ware throw a pass...

McCarron's first year starting:
2700 yards, 67% comp, 16 TDs, 5 INTs

Bray's first year starting:
1850 yards, 56% comp, 18 TDs, 10 INTs (as a true F with zero OL)

Murray's first year starting:
3050 yards, 61% comp, 24 TDs, 8 INTs

So I am inclined to disagree.

I think Mett is still the real deal, he just needs more real SEC experience (which he should have gotten last year, but didn't) and he needs his receivers to run better routes. He definitely needs work on footwork and pocket presence.

But I don't see any receivers breaking away from coverage and none of them are tall enough and strong enough to overpower coverage, so Mett has limited and scarce targets.

JJ was better than everyone gave him credit. Poor coaching and a bad scheme does not help players or you just think Mett sucks also? There is a common theme with our passing offense and it is that no matter who plays QB the passing game sucks.

You think we just have bad luck with Qbs?

How can so many other teams with far less talent have capable passing games?

Lay this out. I think you just throw that out without haviong any idea what you're saying.

He's pretty bad. Not JJ bad, but bad.

Luck? No. Short of pre-Bama Lee, they havee just been pretty bad.

Less talent where? Are you suggesting that Mett is more talented than other QBs in the SEC with better numbers? Are you talking receiving corp? What are you saying exactly?

CLM has recruited well at all positions EXCEPT QB!! Jarrett Lee was supposed to be "All Everything" in TX but turned out to be below average; JJ, well....Mett, TBD...and maybe the best out of all of them decided to play baseball...geez, I dont know.

He recruits them fine. He just doesn't have a clue what to do with them once they are at LSU. Is he the QB killer that several in the sports media claim, I'm not sure yet, but his track record with QBs is pretty poor. This is the 1st year we've had a dedicated QB coach, so I assume that Kragthorpe is working with Mett daily. Maybe he just needs more time...

I'm an LSU fan, and I remain hopeful, and I'm happy we've won 7 out of 8 games, so on this board that makes me a sunshine pumper.

my view on the QB issue- 1st off, Mett is not very good. Arm strength? Yep. But he lacks a lot of the mental stuff, IMO. A lot of QBs play in different schemes in college, and good ones seem to shine through the scheme. You can tell if a kid has control of the offense, and it doesn't look like Mett has that control.

If I could sit down with Les and have a few beers and talk football, I'd ask a few questions. Things like- why haven't any of the other guys seen the field? Is Rivers or Bolden anywhere close to Mettenberger, and if so, why haven't they played a series when Mett stinks it up? Is it because Mett is so fragile, or because they're so terrible?

If Mett goes down, who's the next guy?

You really need to stay out of football discussions and stick to snake ids.

We run a simple pass route system. I really don't know what you need laid out but if you can't see that it doesn't surprise me. Rarely ever run misdirection(easy completions to te's) or rub/pick routes with 2 recievers since most pass routes only include 2 recievers.

quote:

He's pretty bad. Not JJ bad, but bad

JJ, Mett, and JL would thrive in a well orchestrated passing system. Do you really think La. tech has better players than LSU?

bullshite

It is funny all the "experts" tend to agree it is more philosophical than talent.

quote:

Luck? No. Short of pre-Bama Lee, they havee just been pretty bad.

In your opinion LSU is great at developing QB's then? So the coaching would be great?

quote:

Wow. LSU has top 10 talent yet can't get the players to complete forward passes. This has been a broken record for over 4 years.

Part of the problem is that Mett and our WRs are out of sync. There's no way you should overthrow your receivers on every wheel route you throw. That's a matter of not understanding the guy you're throwing to. The whole passing game needs to be developed more. It's not just QB. And finally our O-line is starting to gel, which is huge for us before the Bama game.

The numbers do not reflect Mett's talent. Pretty difficult to sit and get whacked in the pocket when there's no time. Now that our o-line is coming together, Mett should start to gain confidence that he can sit in the pocket a little more comfortably and make a calm, collected throw. He should also start to get his timing with his receivers down more.

Through 8 games, we're 7 and 1. Mett has seemed to improve as the weeks have come and gone. Let's not get all antsy in the pantsy.
