Miles and his representation did work their way into the searches at Purdue, Baylor and Houston.

A source familiar with the Baylor search said that part of Miles’ pitch was an offense run by Steve Sarkisian, the former USC and Washington head coach who is currently an offensive analyst at Alabama. Former New Mexico coach and Maryland assistant Mike Locksley, another Alabama analyst, would also be in tow, the source said.

The source was somewhat skeptical whether those coaches would really be part of the hire, and he was even more unsure that Miles’ offense would really change moving forward.

“When it’s third-and-4, who do you think is going to make that call?” he said.

Those close to the other searches also hinted that Miles’ presentation, a “binder” put together by members of his former LSU staff, was both disorganized and unrealistic.

One source said that several assistants who make more than $1 million per season were listed by Miles as potential coordinator targets. That included Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, who was at one point part of the searches at Baylor and Houston. Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables was listed as a possible hire — even though he could soon see a raise that takes him close to $2 million per season.

“That might be more than Houston has for its entire coaching pool,” one industry source said when he heard about Venables’ inclusion.

Another source indicated that Miles’ interview with Houston was rather short, in large part due to the binder. Miles was not close to the job, those familiar with the search have told us.
