Read this and you’ll understand.

quote:

An in-depth dive into the program’s recruiting past produces three themes: inadequate roster management (a lack of signees at key positions, sometimes because prospects chose other schools), poor development or misevaluations (highly rated players who never panned out and some who still reside on the team in reserve roles) and attrition (players tran

No position has seen more attrition than the lines. The Tigers signed a combined 15 defensive and offensive linemen in the 2014-15 classes, including nose tackle Valentine and defensive tackle Lealaimatafao. Six of them remain on the team.

Think over a half dozen + left this offseason, including a returning starter. Ask yourself why?
All of them were not bums either

I heard last night that there have been 9 OL leave in the last 2 years. Not sure about DL but you'd think since coach O was Dline coach at least that part would be up to speed.

Miles wanted Centers he could convert to Guards and Tackles and faster more thin D linemen

Miles didn't want centers at all.

Miles recruited nearly all guards. He recruited excessive numbers of tight ends who he used solely as extra tackles. We lack depth bc half the team's linemen have left or been kicked off the team. This has been going on for several years.

This is simply about attention to details in the program. It did start with Miles in some ways because he hired the current staff for the most part. However, I see it as the TE position changes in offensive philosophy. When you have TEs that can't convert to tackles in the NFL like we have had, your size and strength deminish. Look at what happened when we had the injury to the offensive lineman in 2013?14? Hawkins? That ended up as an NFL lineman- and a good one. Our ability to run took a high hit and we were vulnerable.
We all wanted more offense, but that comes with a price unless your execution and innovation are excellent.
Right now the offensive linemen do not match the scheme or discipline to execute what is being given to them.
Grimes is a liability.

From the article:
quote:

The offensive line is in a similar position. Five linemen transferred over the offseason, including projected starting right guard Teuhema. That list excludes George Brown, a 2015 signee who left before last season and now plays at Miami. At some practices, LSU offensive line coach Jeff Grimes had so few scholarship bodies that he could not create two full five-man lines. In all, LSU has 11 scholarship linemen. That’s about four or five fewer than what most programs like to keep, said Mike Scarborough, publisher of TigerBait.com, the Rivals.com site covering LSU. Scarborough described the situation as LSU being down one or, even, two offensive line classes. Making it up is not easy, Shipp said. In 2014, the school signed just two offensive linemen, before picking up a late junior college signee who never contributed. “You only have so many spots. By signing three in 2014, it’s hard to sign seven in 2015,” he said. “It’s hard to convince seven to sign. They’re worried about playing time.”

This is a position that requires time to become bigger, stronger, and master technique. I guess we aren't recruiting the right guys who want take this time.

The offensive line is horrible. They've been bullied every game so far.

On defense, outside of White, the middle of the defense has no talent or the talent just isn't ready to play. Linebackers can't cover, safeties are out of position and the D'line gets pushed around.

There also is no leadership on either side of the ball.

re: Serious question - how did our O and D lines get so bad and lacking depth?
Anyone know the last time we signed more than 2 OTs in one year?

2008 (if you don't count 248 lb TE Dillon Gordon as an OT)

It's ok to go a year or two with undersigning a position. But not 9 years. Not for such a critical position.

That includes 2017 by the way. We signed 2. One of them quit and went home on move in day (Stewart). Of the 2 we signed in 2016, one has transferred (Willie Allen) and the other I never hear anything about (Savage). So no, enough hasn't been done to address the problem that's actually been affecting us for years. Last time we finished higher than third in the SECW? 2012. We've been weaker than SEC opponents in the trenches since then. Chavis and Haley were killing us on front 7 recruiting, Studrwra and Grimes are killing us on OL recruiting.

We've had OL recruiting problems for years. And the new regime hasn't done enough to fix it.

It is a good article.

But everyone misses the unspoken truth in it, including the author:

THIS IS O'S FAULT NOT MILES'

The cupboard was not bare when Miles was fired. It was fired when O either ran off or couldn't hold on to a full line of depth we are now playing without.

The question is what happened?? O is all about transparency right? Why hasn't anyone asked him?

I don't know if the OL doesn't know what it's doing or the scheme is bad. Sometimes they get it right. Syracuse OL looks way more in control.

Laugh all you want, Monty, but the simple fact is this line looks completely different if even just Maea is still on campus.

Add in highly rated players like Chidi and Allen and we aren't anywhere close to what we are right now.

Those guys leaving is on O, no one else.

Last year Alabama was trying to convince a Louisiana Left tackle to stay at Bama rather than start in the NFL.

LSU was trying to convince a left tackle to keep playing football and start for LSU rather than join the US Marshals.
