Men and Women finished 4th at the SEC championships this weekend. The men's team has a legitimate shot(along with Oregon, TAM, Florida, and Arkansas at an NCAA title this year.
While there were many impressive individual performances, the highlight was unquestionably Baton Rouge native Julian Parker getting the upset victory in the 800 with a very good time of 1:46.1. He had to defeat the defending NCAA champion and runner-up to get the win.
Rodney Brown continued his dominance in the discus with a victory with a mark of 208'4". He is favored for an individual NCAA title this year.

Was on the team with Julian at Catholic. We all knew he was going to be a star since the beginning of his freshman year.

I didn't realize Julian had become such a great runner. I knew he was good, but not that good.

Because he could run 2 flat a couple months before his 16th birthday? He was a pretty good runner amongst awful competition. Maybe you knew he had talent to run in college but no way you could have projected that he had a 1:46.1 and SEC championship in him. Anybody decent would probably seem destined to be a star compared to the joke that is Baton Rouge 800 meter running.
I don't think he ever ran faster than 1:54 in high school and he didn't even go under 1:50 before this year. What he did this year, and more specifically, this weekend, is nothing short of remarkable. For comparison, the runner he edged at the finish line ran 1:47.5 as a 17 year old high schooler.

Not trying to say your comment is stupid or anything. Just highlighting what an incredible and unforeseeable progression this is. I know T&F is something the average reader on here doesn't know that much about. It would be a shame that people who don't know how ridiculously competitive SEC 800 meter running(particularly this year) is might think that what Julian did is just same song second verse of the performances they saw of him during his high school days.
He went from a solid runner for his age to somebody who might consider going pro/making an Olympic run.
