This is amusing because apparently the schools are having the same fights, as they as of yet have been unable to agree upon the proper format for a 9-game conference schedule, hence this one-year 8 game format.
They didn’t have the votes to do anything in 2024. There is no incentive for the bottom half of the league to agree to add another conference game without additional TV revenues. Once they get that and two additional votes in favor when Texas and Oklahoma join, it will get done.

Votes were not there any of the 9 game scenarios because ESPN wouldn't fork over any more money.
I wouldn’t schedule a ninth game either. But Disney is doing fine.

8 Conference games

Single division
2024 only, conference will reassess after the season.
This is a good idea to see how it goes and then comeback after the season to figure out a better way to construct the conference. But there is no way that a single division is going to last. And honestly thats the part of it I hate the most.

The only real difference is the single division is a true cream rises to the top model with only one winner.
So 15 conference games?
Otherwise, the shortened schedule makes a difference.

Im not sure how I feel about 1 division....

With a 12 team playoff, you can miss the conference championship and still get in.

The goal is to play every team at least once every 2 years. You accomplish that with either 1&7 or 3&6.
That goal isn't that big of a deal to me. I know there will have to be some adjustments with the two new teams, but I'd much rather play in addition to A&M each year, Alabama,Ole Miss than see Missouri,Kentucky and South Carolina more frequently. There has to be a way to maintain more than one current rivalry and play others more frequently.

What if you have two undefeated teams at the top of the single division? Two 12-0 teams, what is the tiebreaker? Co-champions? Like the old days when a committee determined which SEC school would represent the conference when they had equal records?
In a 16 team single division, each team does not play 7 other teams.

Too many lazy ones hung out at the pool and bar. Nicky got his way this time; go back next time to approve the no brainer nine game SEC schedule.

I agree with you that the 1-7 model sucks. Most teams have more than one primary rival and this system would do far too much damage to the traditions of the conference to be worth the scheduling advantages it brings. That’s why it’s only a temporary solution. They will have a new TV contact in place by at least 2026 and at that point the financial incentives will align to move to a 9 game schedule and a 3-6 model.

As an LSU fan I don't care about 8 vs. 9 game schedule. Getting rid of the divisions is what we needed - this finally levels the playing field in the SEC. The only way to frick it up would be to create too many permanent opponents. One is plenty, none is fine. LSU doesn't have any serious rivalry, and as long as we're playing every SEC team every other year I'm good.

With 2 divisions you don't play 15 conference games, so what's the difference?

Whatever they agree to, just like you do when there is a tie within a division now. This shite ain't hard.
quote:
In a 16 team single division, each team does not play 7 other teams.
In a 16 team 2 division setup, each team does not play 7 other teams from the other division that may be stacked with the majority of the best teams (see GA this year). What I mean by cream rises to the top is that you will not have a 2001 LSU team making the CG. If a single div had been in place then, TN would have played FL in a rematch.

With divisions, they play everyone in the division, so it is infinitely easier for the outcome to be determined by playing on the field. There will never be two undefeated teams in the same division. Trying to make the comparison between determining a winner in a division that requires every team to play one another and a group of 16 teams where you only play 8 of the 15 opponents is a reach at best.

Your reference to the 2001 CG doesn't apply in your scenario. You stated:

So? You don't have to have a 4 team playoff just like you don't have to have a CG in a single division.
The only real difference is the single division is a true cream rises to the top model with only one winner.
If you had stated to take the top two teams to the CG then it applies.
And while I can see there is a possible benefit to eliminating the CG in a 12-team playoff scenario, the two 12-0 team scenario is the one that throws a potential wrench in this.
From a playoff point of view, co-champions seems fine with two 12-0 or 11-1 scenarios but if you have two 10-2 or 9-3 (unlikely) teams with identical common opponent records, it may actually impact playoff spots.
