So I was curious and did some looking back at Saban's career at LSU. It wasn't exactly spectacular, 48-16(75%) overall and 28-12(70%) in the SEC. Granted he won a natty but that took three years and only once did he lose less than 3 games. Everyone on here seems to remember this as a great time at LSU. His and Les' careers at LSU seem fairly comparable.

With all that being said, what would you consider success and how long do we give the new coach to succeed before everyone wants another one.

Saban took a dumpster fire and turned it into a national power. That doesn't happen over night.

He took the program from 3-8 to a championship in three years. I guess any year he doesn't win a championship now is a failure for him, but that was pretty good back then. He left the roster stacked for Miles.

Looking forward, success, for me, would be competing for an SEC West championship 3 out of every 4 years and getting in the play-offs on average every 3-4 years

Took Saban 3 years to win a title at Bama. Think about that and what you are wanting the next guy that comes here to do.

I remember LSU being a crap storm when NS took over, I'm assuming Bama was also. We are still loaded minus a QB.

My impression is that a lot of the people on the Rant would be upset with anything less than an SEC title next year. Is that a fair assessment?

I personally would feel like 2 is a fair enough time frame.

I read this stupid shite on here all the time. Saban took over a crappy team. He spent two years erasing the shitty culture. By the end of year two he had a great team and won the SEC Championship. The next year we were 6-1 when we lost our starting QB, and the year went to shite. The next year we won the national championship. His last year we were a two loss team with a lame duck coach going into the bowl.

Nick Saban turned LSU into an elite program, and he did it in less than two years. Then he went to Bama and turned them into the greatest juggernaut of our generation. He took a Camry and turned it into a Ferrari.

I like Les Miles, but he stepped into a Ferrari, maintained it as a Corvette for six years, then turned it into a Camry.

How about less worrying with regards to record and more emphasis on the product on the field. Miles lucky rabbit's foot kept him around WAAAY too long even though the product had slipped....with the SEC west as it is we may not win a championship for years but that shouldn't be the only barometer at which we judge.

Apples and oranges. Did Les take over a 3-8 program with tons of inner turmoil?

So, if Larry Culpepper coaches two-time defending national champions Alabama to a 7-5 record in 2016, and Nick Saban coaches Buffalo to a 5-7 record in 2016, of course it means that Larry Culpepper is a better coach than Nick Saban.

No argument there, expectations should fit the situation.

However, and this is a big IF...

one of the primary reasons it took Saban 3 years is because it takes a couple of years for him to get his people in place, especially on D side of the ball. The number of years will be determined by how fast a coach can get recruits coming in that fit the objective.

So, translating that to our case (here's the big IF), IF the next coach isn't fixated on a whole new system and is flexible (also good and knowledgeable enough) to tweak his plan to fit what's in place then it MIGHT not take that long.

For the record, 3 years is damn impressive. If next coach wins SEC in next 3 years, maybe just the West, I will be impressed.
