Coach Dirk Koetter talked up fourth-year WR Russell Shepard on Tuesday. "Shep is one of those guys that he’s known for his special teams play, but he’s just always hanging around at wide receiver," Koetter said. "You can’t break that guy. Shep is always here. Coaches always say the number one ability is availability, and Shep is always available. He’s in the mix." With the No. 3 receiver job wide open, Sheppard figures to get a chance to win it.
Shep is probably my all time favorite high school recruit who became a Tiger. Never really worked out for him here, but he always had the work ethic. Good to see that paying off.

Still would have loved to see him in a dynamic Rich Rod Pat White style Spread Option offense. I think he would have been sick.

Great for him! Who would have thought given his LSU career he'd be fighting for a starting position at WR four years in

eta: and I think this is a contract year, hopefully he balls out

I don't think so, Russ' arm made White's look like Elway's.

Watch his high school highlights, Russ has a cannon. Amazes me that they never gave him a fair shot against JJ..

no he doesn't.

I mean is your position really that Russ had a cannon for an arm they just deliberately screwed him to play JJ and Lee? I mean come on.

Shepard is one of my all time favorites and was/is an outstanding ambassador for LSU. He was also our best recruiter during his recruitment. Unfortunately, when I saw him in a high school all star type competition after his senior year, I figured he'd never play QB for LSU. It was incredibly embarrassing watching him throw the ball during the passing drills. As bad as Jefferson was, (the worst QB on the greatest team of all time) his arm and even accuracy was better than Shepards. All that being said, I still wish he would have gotten a better shot and more opportunities than running the wildcat. And hell, by 2011, with those years of development and with that squad, he certainly could have done no worse. Great to see him making it in the NFL.

I would give anything to see him throw a 45 yard touchdown pass one day just to watch the melt on the rant.
