When a runner is sliding into second trying to break up a double play is it legal for the second basemen or SS to "accidentally" spikes first step on the runner? It seems like if it was it would make people think twice about it.

Seems valid to me since the runner breaking up the play always slides feet first and on any other attempt to beat a throw they go in head first.

Feet first and spikes up are two different things. Also runner has the right to the base. As long as they don't try to hook legs or slide outside base path.

Good thing they can't sharpen their cleats anymore!

The runner doesn't have a right to home when the catcher has the ball, they'd have to plow over the catcher to get there. They can all out block it. And if a batter just struck out and gets in the way of the catcher on a throw down the runners out. How does the guy that was just thrown out at second not be grouped with that?

Seems like the SS and 2b should have some sort of recourse to protect themselves or make people think a little before they take out someone's legs.

Can't spike a runner, that's ridiculous. But you can sidearm the throw to first and make sure he got his head down in time.

Ahh the fickleness of acceptable and unacceptable acts of aggression that baseball brings. Don't step on a guy trying to take you out, no that's a disgrace instead throw the ball roughly 70-90mph at his head as he runs at you. Or if he is at the plate and is crowding it throw inside to put him back in his place.

This is exactly why 80% of DPs from 2nd to 1st are never really legal outs as the catch/exchange/bag touch are hardly ever executed as they were meant to be.

All falls into that magical grey area of The Code of Baseball.
