The sequence of events after the rain delay last night got me curious. A recap:

Smith starts the top of the 3rd.
Dunn uses a mound visit.
Later, on a 3-1 count, CPM comes out for another visit, and I'm aware that a second mound visit by a coach in an inning means the pitcher has to be replaced.
Strall comes in, but the rain delay hits before he can throw a pitch.
After the rain delay, Strall throws a good pitch that is called a ball and therefore walks the batter (walk charged to Smith due to the 3-1 count).
CPM comes out fired up about the call, but still pulls Strall immediately after that.
Stallings comes in, and proceeds to finish the inning.

I'm not sure about the rule on this: Did Strall entering the game before the rain delay mean that he had to finish pitching to the current batter, or at least throw one pitch, once play resumed? That whole sequence would make a lot more sense if the plan was to put Stallings in as soon as we were allowed to.

Trying to recollect, but I think Strall may have been only pitching to that guy anyways because he was a righty and the next guy was a lefty. They didn't want Strall to throw to the lefty I presume?

You're right about the righty/lefty, and that could very well be the real answer for the quick hook. I was just wondering because the question was raised in the game thread about whether or not it had to be Strall, and I don't think it was ever answered.

From the NCAA Baseball Rule Book, Section 4 under the heading "Removing the Pitcher":

quote:

When the game pitcher crosses the foul line on the way to the mound to start an inning, he shall pitch to the first batter until such batter is put out or reaches base, unless a pinch hitter is substituted or the batter or the pitcher sustains an injury or illness, which incapacitates him from continuing.

LINK

This isn't exactly the situation last night but it's the closest thing I could find regarding making a pitcher pitch to a batter before there can be a pitching change.

Once he entered the game, he had to throw to that batter.

I was going to say you could pull him, BUT didn't he go in to face that hitter then the rain delay, in which case he has to throw to at least one batter.

Yeah, Strall had already replaced Smith and was warming up when the rain delay started. So it looks like he had to finish throwing to that batter before he could be replaced, which is what ended up happening.

Was Strall's pitch a strike?

It appeared to be, but I was in a rain delay induced semi-coma.

Strall threw one pitch and walked the guy last night. He is in the box score, but is not pegged with the walk. The count was 3-1, so Smith was taxed with the "losing" count. Strall is not responsible for the walk.

In a similar situation, Cartwright had a 2-2 count at Auburn when he left the game with an injury. Bugg entered with an "even count", so he was responsible for the batter and was pegged with the walk.

I don't think he would have to throw a pitch. But having been "announced" he was officially in the game. After that, whether he pitched or not, when removed he was no longer eligible.

The same thing with batters. Once announced, they don't have to officially bat. They can be replaced. But after being announced and then being replaced, they have entered and exited the game even if they never set foot in the batters box.

I think Ben McDonald said something about he did not think Strall had to throw that pitch, but I don't think he ever tried to explain it.

Strall would have been responsible for anything but a walk to that batter

After the delay they could have brought anyone else to pitch, but Strall would have been burned.

Because of the delay, it's more than means to justify.

I doubt you "have to." You can be removed for any number of health reasons.. which they aren't going to actively challenge each situation.. They could have removed him and even stated something ill went wrong with him, especially after a delay.. but I doubt questions would even be asked.

His eligibility for the game would have just been burned.

Just like a pitch hitter that is announced before the rain delay is in the game and the batter he replaced is out for the rest of the game.

What I don't understand is why the office box score has Strall has a "-" under the number of pitches. I understand that the he was not officially charged with the walk by I thought he would have shown up in the box score has having thrown a pitch.

That doesn't make sense to me either. Strall would've been responsible for any outcome except a walk. Even though the walk, and therefore the subsequent runner, was charged to Smith, Strall still threw an official pitch.

Pretty sure a pitcher has to finish an at bat when brought out of the bullpen... A batter can't face 3 pitchers in one AB

I think

IDK if anyone has said exactly what happened, but he came in to a 3-1 count from Smith and after his warm up tosses The umps called the rain delay. When the delay ended, he threw ONE pitch. Blue called it a Ball (but it looked like a Strike). CPM came out and pulled Strall, while having words with the ump all the way to the mound.

The walk did not count against Strall, but Idk how that one pitch was marked.

Ben didnt think he had to face the batter but he may have had to because of the rule that was posted earlier.
