Kevin Faulk gave 4 years of his heart and sole to the LSU program and fans. He is also the all time SEC yards from scrimmage leader. Thinking of all the great athletes who have played in this league, that's a 'damn strong' achievement. I would vote yes to retire #3.

I'm not going to bash Faulk because I think he showed what so many others lack...loyalty. He was also a wonderful player. That being said, I think you have to raise the bar so high, that it is almost impossible to get your number retired. When someone finally does get their number retired it is for a damn good reason. Billy Cannon: Heisman winner and unquestionably one of the best college football players of all time. Pete Maravich, all time NCAA scoring leader and unquestionably one of the best college basketball players of all time. Can you say Faulk or Dorsey or Hillard were among that group? No. Maybe Petit, maybe Shaq, but the list is real short.

And he did it at a time when no one wanted to come to LSU, and at a time when we were the most desparate we have been in our history. Probably as much as Gerry DiNardo (if not more), Faulk is responsible for the "Bring Back the Magic" campaign in 1995 that quite probably literally saved LSU football. 3 more losing seasons (after the 6 straight we had just suffered) could have killed our attendance, spirit and enthusiasm the same way teams like Ole Miss and Tulane have been.

He never won a Heisman, or a National Championship, or even an SEC Championship, but I do not believe any player not named Billy Cannon was ever as important to LSU football as Kevin Faulk was (maybe not even Billy).

I'm just not one for retiring numbers in college. If I had my way, no.20 would be available. Nothing against Mr. Cannon, I just think its unneccessary.

I remember Kevin Faulk said once that his proudest moment was not a football achievement, but when he got his degree......and not any degree......a degree from LSU! I love #3!

That is certainly one standard for measuring whether a player deserves to have his number retired. But there are other ways of looking at it.

For example, Chad Pennington and Randy Moss never won a Heisman or a National Championship, and there might be several players better than them in the future at Marshall. But they were both extraordinarily instrumental in raising Marshall's program to literally another level. That's something only one or two other players will ever be able to do at Marshall.

Likewise, there is virtually zero chance that any player in LSU Football will ever even have the opportunity to do as much for our program as Faulk did, let alone actually come through and achieve what he did. The contribution he made to this program was truly Billy Cannon-like.

I agree. Faulk helped turn us aroung and push us in the right direction. What about Y.A. Tittle?

I think at least ten years should pass before doetermining if someone is lengedary enough to retire their number. We still talk about Billy Cannon. I don't know how long Dorsey will be talked about. LSU have had other dominating linemen in the past.
