Pelini is not why our defense is losing games and he also should not be fired for these reasons:

1. Pelini needs a chance to get the defense running the way he wants it.

Pelini only has 2 years left on his contract and only coached 4 seasons in his last tenure with LSU starting in the 2004 season. His first year at LSU last time was a drop off and had a chance to bring the defense back up to win another NC a few years later. Aranda had our defense trending downward every year he stayed on the staff regardless of how much people liked him.

Previous Defensive Rankings with Pelini:
2004 - #17
2005 - #3
2006 - #4
2007 - #17 *NC

Previous Defensive Rankings with Aranda:
2016 - #5
2017 - #14
2018 - #26
2019 - #33 *NC

2. Scheme matters very little when your players dont buy in.

Running zone coverage in the Mississippi State game wasnt going to make players want to play harder for the team.

Coach O being too vocal of his political opinion has more to do with that than anything. *Coach O needs to take one out of Belichick and Saban's playbook on how to speak to the media.* Like alot of other players and coaches, he needs to be reminded that he's a football coach and needs to act accordingly. Whether you agree with Trump or not, going on Fox News and saying you love Trump and that you think he's doing a great job is not good for business when alot of your players disagree with him. It doesn't benefit O to say anything political at all. Even Woodward has said he says way too much sometimes.

3. Lack of depth to work with.

Our #18 MIKE linebacker (Clark) is playing awful. He's supposed to be the backbone of our defense and I think he has just hit his glass ceiling of talent. Flott isnt very good either and these two players alone make up for our biggest problem, giving up big plays. Last season, most of these players got reps as second string to give first string a break. They werent starters though for a reason. Most of the depth we have comes from true freshman. True freshman may have the potential to be good but you arent going to have a top 25 defense with a defense full of them. Prime example is Bama last season losing games because they had a few true freshman start.

Pelini is awful, I don’t think there’s any denying that. The same issues week 1 are there in week 9. There’s been some small improvements, but the confusion this late in the game is unreal.

He’s one of the problems. Raymond keeps getting a pass even though he’s been terrible for 2 years now.

Yea it’s all because Ed Orgeron didn’t call the president a stupid fricking bigot when he was invited to go on the news go back to your gender studies class and let the adults talk

The DB confusion this year is puzzling as well. I mean they are straight up lost.

Which coach is mostly responsible for the DB's not being able to handle the receivers criss-crossing their routes?

Why didn’t you include Pelinis more recent defenses?

Pelini’s first tenure at LSU was 2005.

Aranda was a better DC than Pelini. In the same situation, he wouldn’t be giving up 600 yards to MSU.

Despite winning the NC in '07, it became glaringly obvious that year that Bo could not defend the spread very well. I even remember Gary quoting an OC during the Ole Miss game that said, "We think we see a flaw in his scheme". Now every team is running some version of the spread, and he is clueless.

The rankings listed with Aranda need to be taken with a grain of salt. Defense improved every game last year. Also, they were on the field a hell of a lot more than normal due to the efficiency of the offense.

Whether you think Pelini is the problem (he is) or not isn’t the question. This is about to become the statistically worst scoring defense in the 127-year history of the program. Someone’s head must roll for this.

You made really decent points...
BUT, elite coaches should be able to adapt to what they have- not force what is not working.

So the Covid, BLM, opt outs, no spring etc issues you constantly peddle as excuses for O don’t also apply to other coaches??

They’re just awful but O just needs more time and more millions for coaches not to coach so HE can continue not coaching.

I’m guessing the Ensure Lack of Accountability section was one of the first sections of The Binder, Derek

Let me ask you: do you really thin Stevens is playing poorly because of something O said?

If he is that upset why not opt-out? All he has done is put bad tape out.

This isn’t all Pelini’s fault but at the same time, there is a lot of stuff that’s all his fault.

Letting Alabama get the Flott-Smith matchup the entire first half is all on him.

Correct.

The question is do we throw more millions of dollars at a problem to give the guy that hired him another hire believing it won’t be more of the same.

No one gets a pass when it's that bad, especially not the DC.

Pelini chose to keep running man defense play after play after play.

Pelini chose to not keep safeties over the top to help out.

Pelini chose not to blitz and eliminate slow developing deep pass plays.

Pelini is the MLB coach that refused to take out Clark.
