Even if he did trap it at first as long as he comes down with the ball and it never touches the ground is what really matters correct?

No. If the ball touches any surface then it is treated the same as if it were a ground ball (if it hits a wall or ground within the foul lines) and cannot be caught for an out.

Unless it goes over the wall in fair territory and hits something to bounce it back, then it is supposed to be a homerun, but the mentally impaired umpires have twice this year and at least three times in the new Box called those hits as a "ground rule double." But that isn't what you were asking about.
