Was Hankton seriously considered or was he just satisfying the Rooney Rule?

The Rooney rule does not apply to coordinator jobs in the NFL. Only head coach and front office jobs.

Hankton wasn't getting that job. This was a courtesy / learning interview for the future to get his name out there.

It applies to coordinators and QB coaches. They updated the rule in 2020, 2021, then again last offseason

quote:

The NFL requires every team to interview at least two external minority candidates for open head coaching positions and at least one external minority candidate for a coordinator job.

Additionally, at least one minority and/or female candidate must be interviewed for senior-level positions. Such positions include team president and senior executives. 2. As of 2022, NFL teams are required to conduct outside interviews with a minority and/or female candidate for vacant quarterback coach positions. With so many prospective coaches beginning their careers in that role, the ruling is expected to help increase the pool of qualified minority coaches in the future.

There’s some guys that get some nice, but short vacations this time of year thanks to the Rooney rule.

I would bust him down to WR coach for interviewing. This was not an alignment focused move.

Bump him for simply interviewing for a definite upgrade of a position as coordinator for an NFL team? You can’t expect everyone in staff to always turn down promotion opportunities

Didn't know it changed. I heard an NFL guy on a national radio saying just last week that it didn't apply to coordinators.

Hate the Rooney Rule. Should be most qualified candidate regardless of their race. The fact that you HAVE to interview someone because of their skin color is dumb. One of the many reasons I hate the NFL and hope they go bankrupt.
