After the play was ruled a catch by the umps, why did they send a runner back to 3rd base? The guy going from 2nd to 3rd was tagged out. And the guy going home didn't have to come back to the base for an appeal. Confused.

Yeah, it's a stupid rule that they have to "appeal" to get the 3rd out because of ump error. Then they don't even get credit for a triple play because it had to be "appealed."

Dumb rule is dumb.

The runner going from 2nd to 3rd was clearly tagged out by Reid during the play, but he was the one standing on 3rd during the appeal. We shouldn't have even had to appeal at all, since Reid touched 3rd base when he got the ball, which put out the runner at 3rd who didn't tag up. It was a huge mess.

Actually, they have to appeal the runner leaving the base too early. Hence, you're a dumbass.

Well, there wouldn't have been an opportunity for a triple play in the first place if not for the "ump error" of calling it a catch.

they do have to appeal, but Reid had already tagged 3rd with the ball in hand

My question wasn't about the appeal. Its why the umps put a runner back on 3rd base after their huddle. In no way, did it make any sense to have a guy on 3rd.

That doesn't make sense to me either. Especially the fact that they put a runner there who was unquestionably out regardless of whether or not KRob made the catch.

The umps fricked it from start to finish. Robertson didn't even catch that ball. But assuming he did, when Romero threw to ball to 3rd Reid's foot was on the bag so the runner that went home was out. Then he tagged out the guy coming from second for the third out. Why a runner was on 3rd after all of that is beyond me. It's like umps weren't even watching the game. Just like when Fraley was called out at the plate, I don't think the ump was watching the play, he just guessed.

Hard to believe all the umps missed the fact it was NOT a catch!

I believe the runner is put back on third in case after the appeal the call is safe. Of course he wasn't, but that's the reason.

I think they were as confused as the rest of us, didn't take the time to fully talk it out, and just took a guess at what the right answer was.

Well that doesn't make any sense either. If he was called safe on the appeal then they would've just added a run to the board.

On second thought, no reason to put runner back on third. If the call was 'safe' the run would count since he crossed the plate. Stupid umps are stupid.
