I was told, by oldtimers back in the 1960s (I was a kid and those guys were in their 70's), that our 1908 team had multiple players who were paid somehow for playing or weren't even LSU students at the time. Anyone else heard something like that? The implication was that LSU wasn't going to officially claim that title due to those questions.
Why should any of that matter (even if it’s all true) when the NCAA recognizes it? Does the NCAA not know about these qualifiers or did they just award LSU the title in ignorance?

Even if the 1908 team had mercenary players, it wasn't exactly uncommon for the day. College football was like the wild west.
Walter Eckersall was a HOF and 3-time all-American QB for UChicago. He never attended class, he left school after his final game, and the university doesn't even have an official academic record for him as a student. They still claim their 1905 national championship.

Mercenaries used back then kinda of like now. Not even LSU students and they have all passed away so who cares?

I'm tired of LSU being screwed. This really pisses me off. Dadgummit. Dagnabbit. Nobody can tell me anybody was better in 1908. This group was the epitome of team play. Just crown them.

It is disgraceful that the 1908 team and legacy of Doc Fenton is still not recognized today!! Claim the 1908 Championship!!!!!
